弹核是立法机构针对高级政府官员所进行的法律指控过程。各国家的立法在弹核的定义和后果方面有所不同。在许多国家，例如，拉丁美洲的国家，“弹核”意味着绝对的困境；因此，只有在这些司法辖区的官员被明确免职后，才被视为“弹核”。相反，在其他司法辖区，比如在美国，“弹核”是指当局起诉的前一步；被众议院提出弹核的现任美国总统，其指控却会被参议院纠正，可能被判无罪。

Impeachment is the process by which a legislative body addresses legal charges against a government official. National legislations differ regarding the definition and consequences of an impeachment. In many countries, for example those in Latin America, "impeachment" refers to a definitive destitution; an official in these jurisdictions is therefore only considered "impeached" when they have been removed from office. Conversely, in other jurisdictions such as theUnited States, "impeachment" refers to a previous step, that of the authority's indictment; aU.S. president impeached by the House of Representatives remains in power while charges are addressed by the Senate, and may be found not guilty.
