Life Online

A growing body of research demonstrates that in young people psychiatric illnesses are linked with heavy consumption of social media.  According to a survey in 2017, young Britons reported that social networks gave them scope for self-expression and community-building. But(前句铺垫,转折) they also said  that the platforms exacerbated anxiety, depression, sleep-deprivation, bullying, body image and “FOMO” (“fear of missing out”). An experiment in 2014 concluded that Facebook triggers the same impulsive part of the brain as gambling and substance abuse. //

// It is difficult to prove that obsessing over likes and comments causes mental illness, rather than the other way around. But one survey tracked 5,208 Americans between 2013 and 2015, finding that an increase in Facebook activity was associated with a future decrease in mental health. Happiness rates are highestfor FaceTime (91%), a video-calling app, and phone calls (84%). When it comes to social networking, actual conversations are hard to beat.

A body of

表示“很多、大量”,除了a lot of..., a large amount of...等词,我们还可以说a body of...,比如a body of evidence 大量证据,a body of information 大量信息

a slew of

A slew of competitors, promoting comfort and inclusivity, have taken thatmessage to heart.

a host of

A dearth of competition among firms helps explain wage inequality and a host of other ills.

在新闻中,body 还有一个重要的意思为 a group of people who work or act together, often for an official purpose, or who are connected in some other way(团体;社团;群体),比如

a regulatory body 监管机构,an advisory body 咨询机构。

demonstrate /ˈdemənstreɪt/  v.

to show sth. clearly by giving proof or evidence

 heavy consumption of social media

= heavy use of social media.

The scope of an activity, topic, or piece of work is the whole area which it deals with or includes.

micro(scope) 显微镜 scope还有...

The job offers very little scope for promotion.

文中give sb. scope for sth.

exacerbate /ɪɡˈzæsəbeɪt/   v.

exacerbate sth(formal) to make sth. worse, especially a disease or problem

  eg. Environmental pollution exacerbated human's health problems.

  “恶化”补充一个表达be worse off: People in rural areas are even worse off.(OPP:better off)

sleep-deprivation

A of B,使A失去B,比如,平时工作忙,难以和朋友欢聚,可以说:

The busy work deprives me of the pleasure of meeting my friends.

比如,a deprived area 贫困地区,sb. comes from a deprived background 某人出身贫寒。

miss out

“FOMO” (“fear of missing out”)

miss out : to fail to use an opportunity to enjoy sth good 错失(美好事物)

impulsive

If you describe someone as impulsive, you mean that they do things suddenly without thinking about them carefully first.

substance abuse

also known as drug abuse,了解即可

obsess   v.

obsess sb.to completely fill your mind so that you cannot think of anything else, in a way that is not normal

the other way around

是一个很地道的用法,表示“in the opposite position, direction, or order”,前面常加否定词,比如 rather than, not等,表示“而不是相反的情况”。

To succeed, edtech(教育技术, Educational technology) must be at the service of teaching, notthe

other way around.(ps: not the other way around = not at the service of learning.)

demonstrate;

according to;

conclude;

prove;

find;
