Some Feelings 20
i find an interesting and efficient way to increase the vocabulary.
just watch movies.
i don't think it is a good method to remember the English Words just by reciting them again and again unless preparing the certain examinations.
knowing about a word through a movie is absolutely interesting. it's so different from the traditional ways.
word in the vocabulary book is just a word while that in the movie is a story.
as is known to all, we remember something for a longer time through stories than the rote learning.
for example, last weekend i saw a movie Serendipity. i haven't known this word before, but i believe i will not forget it if i can keep the plot of the movie in my mind.
this word means so much. it reflects the obvious difference between Chinese and western.
it reminds me of my previous translation experience that i don't know how to translate Chinese “缘” into English, because there is no such a concept of “缘” in western culture.
when i saw the movie again. i found the answer.
actually the 缘 in Chinese culture is to some degree same as the fate or luck.
that's why the movie is named 缘分天注定.
i searched the meaning of the word “Serendipity” in the Collins English Dictionary: Serendipity is the luck some people have in finding or creating interesting or valuable things by chance.
we know that the movie just tells a love story about serendipity by which the hero and the heroine are together finally.
so i think this word is a pretty and wonderful word and i like it so much.
It suddenly occurred to me that there is an “eye of one poetry”(诗眼)in Chinese classical poetry.
i think it is also applicable to the movies where sometime one word can define and conclude the whole movie.
if such method can work, we must look up the significant word in the dictionary.
i plan to choose some famous movie to know about more words.
