TOM presented himself before Aunt \color{#dc3545}{Polly} 政客 , who was sitting by an open window in a pleasant \color{#dc3545}{rearward} 在后面的;向后面的 apartment, which was bedroom, breakfast–room, dining–room, and library, combined. The \color{green}{balmy} 芳香的;温和的;止痛的 summer air, the \color{#e4a32b}{restful} 宁静的 quiet, the \color{green}{odor} 气味;名声 of the flowers, and the drowsing \color{green}{murmur} 低语;低语声;低声抱怨;潺潺声 of the bees had had their effect, and she was nodding over her \color{green}{knitting} 针织;编织物;[外科] 骨愈合 —for she had no company but the cat, and it was asleep in her lap. Her \color{green}{spectacles} [轻] 眼镜 were \color{green}{propped} 支撑 up on her gray head for safety. She had thought that of course Tom had deserted long ago, and she wondered at seeing him place himself in her power again in this \color{green}{intrepid} 无畏的 way. He said: "Mayn't I go and play now, aunt?"

When she found the entire fence whitewashed, and not only whitewashed but \color{green}{elaborately} 精巧地 coated and recoated, and even a streak added to the ground, her \color{green}{astonishment} 惊讶 was almost \color{#e4a32b}{unspeakable} 无法形容的 . "Well, I never! There's no getting round it, you can work when you're a mind to, Tom." And while she closed with a happy \color{#dc3545}{Scriptural} 圣经的 flourish, he "hooked" a \color{#e4a32b}{doughnut} 油炸圈饼 .

There was a gate, but as a general thing he was too crowded for time to make use of it. His soul was at peace, now that he had settled with Sid for calling attention to his black thread and getting him into trouble.

Tom skirted the block, and came round into a muddy alley that led by the back of his aunt's cow–stable. Tom's army won a great victory, after a long and hard–fought battle. Then the dead were counted, prisoners exchanged, the terms of the next disagreement agreed upon, and the day for the necessary battle appointed; after which the armies fell into line and marched away, and Tom turned \color{green}{homeward} 在归途上,向家地 alone.
