Book 3 Chapter 3, Social Moralit
At the beginning of this chapter, Lewis reminds us that Christian social morality offers nothing new but adheres to the Golden Rule:"Do as you would be done by." He states that great moral teachers never introduce new moralities; rather, people need to be reminded of the old moralities repeatedly.
He then clarifies the relationships between Christianity and political programs, as well as Christianity and other professions. What I found interesting is that at the end of this chapter, after discussing the specific topic of lending money with interest, and describing what a New Testament Christian society might look like, Lewis shifts our focus inward—from social matters to religious matters. It seems to me that Lewis is suggesting that only if every individual is "right" inside can the whole society be right.
About the Golden Rule, I remember reading an article that stated almost all religions, including Confucianism, express a similar idea, however, only Christianity phrases it in a positive way. I'm not sure how it's stated in other religions, but in Confucianism, it is said, "Do not treat others in ways you would not want to be treated," in just eight Chinese characters, which is indeed in an negative sense.
