The First SessionHow to build a learning community with parents? 如何建立家长学习者社区
Orientation led by PYP coordinators, topics chosen by parents, homeroom teachers; activities and games same with what they have in the classroom, English lesson for parents, learning new glossary of PYP, unpacking the report card, database for topics that parents can share to each other, meetings for dads, not only moms; reshaping education sharing IB philosophy with the parents esp to those whose kids are going to the primary school; sent out teachers’ research about topics that they think are really interesting for them and useful for the parents (passion project); reading program for parents/ reading workshop run by parents (parents suggest speakers); small group counselling; lately parents come with a lot of prior knowledge already so it is important to get to know what they really need; One to one parent conference; make sure that the parents somehow understand the teaching strategies, objectives, etc. ; make sure that the expectations are clear from the very beginning; use case studies as examples; homeroom teachers first then escalate to PTA if it can’t be solved
The Second SessionWhat are other schools doing?
其他学校是怎样做的?
Some schools have the stand alone language units but its not in the planner; Role of EAL teachers; EAL team can, can’t do’s ; content of language unit is related to the unit of inquiry for each level; literacy skills that are most appropriate for a specific unit; EAL teachers are also present with the unit meetings, planning, etc. Homeroom teachers + EAL teachers work together; Language skills expectation + prior knowledge check of units already learned; language bridging program ; Language teachers are considered as subject teachers, they also write their own planners

CCTV policy- only the security guards, and school administration; educate the parents; make the school protocols visible in the school premises;

- awareness of the areas of interest/ gather topics that the teachers are interested at and choose the most popular ones so as to make the discussions more useful and structured
