美国学校对学生穿校服的要求比较宽松，不同的州、不同的学校对学生服装的要求也不同，但是绝不是说美国学生都可以完全不穿校服。只是学生可以比较自由地选择符合自己个性的校服，也有较少干脆不穿校服的学生。但是在美国，依然有半数以上的中学都设立了“着装守则”。一方面，规范着装有利于维持校园秩序。另一方面，校方也意识到，宽松的“着装守则”能让孩子们更开心地来上学。然而美国校服相对于日常服装价格低廉，可以减轻家长负担，这是校服政策受到普遍欢迎的一大原因；校服在校园里还扮演着平衡器的作用，它削弱了来自不同经济条件家庭的学生的差异，降低了学生间的相互攀比和同辈压力。
