There are many forms of life on earth,including human beings.

Life exists in variety of conditions.

Some forms of life live in wateryenvironment, like the oceans.

Other forms of life can be found in verydry areas, like deserts.

However, for any form of life to exist,conditions must be right.

When conditions are not right, that formsof life will become extinct.

To become extinct means to die outcompletely.

Conditions must be right for life to exist.

Millions of years ago there were forms oflife that no longer exist.

When conditions changed, this form of lifedied out.

One extinction events happened about 250million years ago.

This was the largest extinction event ofall time.

Many forms of life became extinct.

Ninety six percent of all life in theoceans died out.

Most insects also became extinct.

This event happened over a period ofseveral million years.

The courses of the extinction event arestill unknown.

Possible courses include large volcaniceruption and global warming.

Some scientists believe that there wereseveral courses.

They believe that a series of eventscourses extinctions.

Scientist are working to better understandwhat really happened.

In modern times we humans face changingconditions.

For humans to live we need clean air andclean water.

Pollution is now a growing problem aroundthe world.

Pollution poisons the air and water that wedepend on.

Polluted air makes people sick and afraidto go outside.

Polluted water poisons their food supply.

As a result, we never know which food issafe to eat.

Human beings cannot live in a poisonenvironment.

Therefore, pollution is major threat to ourexistence.

Humans need temperature to be in a comfortablerange.

To be in a comfortable range means to be neithertoo hot nor too cold.

With global warming, global temperaturesare rising.

As temperatures rise, the polar icecapswere melt.

As the polar icecaps melt, ocean levels willrise.

Areas of some countries will soon be underwater.

People will be forced to relocate fromflooded areas.

In nature, even small changes can sometimeshave large effects

It’s difficult to predict what is going tohappen.

The entire ecosystem that we depend on ischanging.

Some of these changes are irreversible（不可逆的）

Irreversible changes cannot be undone.

Let’s hope that humans are smart enough tounderstand how the world is changing.

With more understanding, we can make betterchoices about what to do.

We can face the challenges of pollution andglobal warming.

We need to do this before it’s too late.

This planet of earth is our only home, andwe need to protect it.
