Important Concepts

Search Query

A search term that generated impressions of your site page on a Google SERP. For more easy to understand, the word you put into the search box of a search engine.

Search engine results pages (SERP)

Web pages served to users when they search for something online using a search engine.

SERPs typically contain two types of content – “organic” results and paid results.

Every SERP is unique, even for search queries performed on the same search engine using the same keywords or search queries. This is because virtually all search engines customize the experience for their users by presenting results based on a wide range of factors beyond their search terms, such as the user’s physical location, browsing history, and social settings.

Three primary types of search on internet

Organic search results

Listings of web pages that appear as a result of the search engine’s algorithm

Impression

Each time a link URL appears in a search result, it generates an impression. The user doesn’t have to scroll down to see your search result for the impression to count.

Click

When the user selects a link that takes them outside of Google Search, that counts as one click. If the user clicks a link, hits the back button, then clicks the same link again -- still one click. If then, they click a different link -- that’s two clicks.

Click-through rate (CTR)

Equal to Clicks divided by Impressions, multiplied by 100.

Referring domains

The domains that have at least one link pointing to a target URI.

Backlinks

Links from other sites pointing to a target URI.

Average position

This is the mean ranking of your page(s) for a query or queries.
