The death of a ghost

ghost /ɡəʊst/: the spirit of a dead person that some people think they can feel or see in a place鬼，鬼魂，幽灵，如：They say the young girl’s ghost still haunts (= often appears in ) the house. 他们说那个少女的鬼魂依旧在那房子里出没。

①For years, villagers believed that Endley Farm was haunted.②The farm was owned by two brothers, Joe and Bob Cox.③They employed a few farmhands, but no one was willing to work there long.④Every time a worker gave up his job, he told the same story.⑤Farm labourers saidthatthey always woke up to find that work had been done overnight.⑥Hay had been cut and cowsheds had been cleaned.⑦A farm worker, who stayed upall night, claimed to have seen a figure cutting cornin the moonlight.⑧In time, it became an accepted fact thatCox brothers employed a conscientious ghost that did most of their work for them.

语篇导读：本段讲述村民们断定恩得利农场有“鬼”。①首句开门见山，人们认为恩得利农场“鬼”；②③④⑤⑥⑦解释有“鬼”的原因；⑧农场有“鬼”成为了普遍接受的事实。

For years：多年来，时间状语，通常位于句尾，在此提前表示对时间状语的强调

【词汇精析】haunt：①if the soul of a dead person haunts a place, it appears there often〔鬼魂〕经常出没于，如：The pub is said to be haunted by the ghost of a former landlord. 据说这个酒吧里经常有一位前任房主的鬼魂出没。②to make someone worry or make them sad缠扰，烦扰；萦绕在…心头，如：Clare was haunted by the fear that her husband was having an affair. 克莱尔总是担心丈夫有外遇。③to cause problems for someone over a long period of time〔长期〕困扰，如：an error that would come back to haunt them for years to come 会在今后几年不断缠扰他们的一个失误

every time：每次，每当，作从属连词，引导时间状语从句

labourer/'leɪbərə/：someone whose work needs physical strength, for example building work体力劳动者，工人，如：a farm labourer 农场工人

Farm labourers said that they always woke up to find that work had been done overnight.：①本句中两个that引导宾语从句；②to find that work had been done overnight：动词不定式短语，作结果状语。

overnight /əʊvə'naɪt/：suddenly or surprisingly quickly突然，一下子，一夜之间，如：He became a millionaire overnight. 他一夜之间就成了百万富翁。

hay /heɪ/：long grass that has been cut and dried, used as food for cattle〔作牛饲料用的〕干草，饲草，如：He ignited the wood with a band of hay. 他用一把干草引燃了这些木柴。

stay up：熬夜，不睡觉，如：I like to stay up until midnight or even later on my natural clock. 我很喜欢熬夜,一直到午夜或者更晚,这是我的生物钟。

corn /kɔːn/：plants such as wheat, barley , and oats or their seeds谷物；谷粒，如：an ear of corn 谷穗

moonlight /'muːnlaɪt/：the light of the moon月光，如：The water looked silver in the moonlight. 月光下，水面一片银白色。

【难句解析】A farm worker, who stayed up all night, claimed to have seen a figure cutting corn in the moonlight.：①who stayed up all night：who作关系代词，引导非限制性定语从句；②claimed to have seen：过去时+过去完成时，表示see动作发生在claim动作之前；③cutting corn in the moonlight：现在分词短语作定语，表主动，修饰figure。

in time：within an indefinite time or at an unspecified future time久而久之，终于，最后，如：In time, their party will have a chance to campaign again for its ideas, and the votes of the people. 在一段时间后，反对党有机会为宣传他们的理念和争取人民的选票而再次竞选。

conscientious /,kɒnʃɪ'enʃəs/：careful to do everything that it is your job or duty to do勤勉认真的；细心负责的，如：a conscientious and hard-working student 勤勉刻苦的学生

【难句解析】In time, it became an accepted fact that Cox brothers employed a conscientious ghost that did most of their work for them. ①fact that Cox brothers employed a conscientious ghost…：此处的that是连词，引导同位语从句；②ghost that did most of their work for them. 此处的that是关系代词，引导定语从句，修饰先行词ghost。
