加入该公司后过了大约一年,我接受了一项新任务,是研究开发一种叫作“镁橄榄石”的新材料。“镁橄榄石”是一种新型陶瓷,绝缘性能好,特别适合于高频电流,据说用作电视机显像管的绝缘材料最为理想。与当时另一种主要材料滑石瓷相比,“镁橄榄石”的优势非常明显,应用已呈爆发式的增长。但这种材料在合成成型方面却没有成功的先例。无论对我个人而言,还是对公司而言,“镁橄榄石”的研究开发是迫在眉睫又极具挑战性的。企业里没有什么像样的试验设备,我日以继夜,反复试验,结果总是不理想。我昼夜不分、苦思冥想、不停地试验,几乎把自己逼入了“痴狂”的状态,最后总算合成成功了。后来我才得知,成功合成“镁橄榄石”的除我之外,只有美国的通用电气(GE)一家。所以,我开发的“镁橄榄石”引起了广泛的关注。

"Magnesium peridot" is a new type of ceramic, good insulation properties, especially suitable for high-frequency currents, it is said that it is the most ideal insulation material for TV picture tubes. Compared with talc porcelain, another major material at that time, the advantages of "magnesium olivine" were very obvious, and the application has shown explosive growth. But there is no successful precedent for synthetic molding of this material. For me as well as for the company, the research and development of "magnesium peridot" is urgent and extremely challenging. There is no decent test equipment in the enterprise, I work day and night, trial and error, and the results are always not ideal. Day and night, I meditated and experimented, almost forced myself into a state of "madness", and finally the synthesis was successful. Later, I learned that the only person who successfully synthesized "magnesium olivine" was General Electric (GE) in the United States. Therefore, the "magnesium olivine" I developed has attracted a lot of attention.

Using "magnesium olivine" with particularly good high-frequency insulation performance as a material, the earliest product developed into a "U-shaped insulator" was developed. This is an order from "Panasonic Electronics Industry", which is a division of the Panasonic Electric Industry Group responsible for the production and manufacture of picture tubes. At that time, when Japanese home picture tube televisions were beginning to become popular, the "U-shaped insulator" was the most ideal for using the "magnesium peridot" I developed as an insulation part in the electron gun. The most difficult problem in the development of "U-shaped insulators" is how the raw material "magnesium olivine" powder is formed. This powder is very crunchy and cannot be formed. Like making noodles, sticky materials are required. In the past, clay was added, but clay always contained impurities. How to solve this "sticky" problem, I think and experiment every day, racking my brains, and I can't figure it out. One day, something incredible happened. That day, I walked into the lab thinking about this intractable "sticky" problem. Suddenly, I was tripped by a container and almost fell, and subconsciously looked under my feet, and my shoes were stained with experimental rosin resin.

I immediately set up a simple pot, put the ceramic ingredients and rosin into the pot, mixed while heating, and then put it into the mold to form. When the molding is successful, when it is sintered in a high-temperature furnace, the rosin as a binder is burned and volatiliated, and no impurities are left in the finished "U-shaped insulator". So the headache was solved all at once. Looking back today, that moment can only be called "God's revelation."

Because I have accumulated similar experience many times, when I encounter difficult problems later, I will say to the employees, "If God is willing to lend a helping hand, you must study hard and devote yourself to your work." In this case, no matter how difficult the situation is, God will certainly help you and things will succeed. Since then, the "U-shaped insulator" I developed has become an indispensable component for the manufacture of television picture tubes, and our company has received a large number of orders from Panasonic Electronics Industry. It was this product that gave the crumbling company hope to come back to life, and the company's expectations were concentrated on me alone.

可以说,这时的技术和业绩也奠定了日后京瓷公司发展的基础。而且这个“最初的成功体验”让我悟到一个重要的道理:即使在苦难当中,只要拼命工作,就能带来不可思议的好运。“那家伙真可怜。”那时周围的人都这么说。我想人有一个时期处在这种不幸的境遇里也未必是坏事。冬天越寒冷,樱花就开得越烂漫。人也是一样,不体验痛苦和烦恼,就很难有大的发展,就不会抓住真正的幸福。我的人生中曾遭遇过无数的困难和挫折,但恰如奥赛罗棋盘上的黑棋一下子返归白棋一样,困难和挫折后来都变为成功的基础。现在回顾起来,我感觉到,当初认为痛苦的事情后来全都给我带来了好结果。

The colder the winter, the more cherry blossoms bloom. The same is true of people, if they do not experience pain and trouble, it is difficult to have great development and will not grasp true happiness. I have encountered countless difficulties and setbacks in my life, but just as the black chess pieces on the Othello chessboard suddenly returned to white, difficulties and setbacks have become the basis for success. Looking back now, I feel that all the things that I thought were painful have brought me good results.

这么想来,人生中的困难和挫折,正是我人生的起点,或许也正是我最大的“幸运”。比如,我不幸进入了连年亏损的松风工业公司,同期来的大学生中只剩下我孤零零一个人的时候,“稻盛君真可怜,大学里很用功,成绩这么好,却只能待在那样的破公司里,运气太差,他的人生今后不知会怎样呢。”朋友们这么评价我,不知是同情还是嘲笑。看到同事们一个个凭各自的本领开拓进取,自己却无处可去,只能一个人龟缩在这倒霉的公司里—一种绝望感让我几乎精神崩溃。

但是,现在想来,正是这种不幸或考验教我懂得,只有拼命工作才能给人生带来好运。从这个意义上说,苦难和挫折是神赐予我的最好礼物。在逆境中坚持认真工作,拼命努力,我现在所有的成功都是建筑在这个基础之上的。如果不经历苦难和挫折,考进了名校,就职于大企业,我的人生就完全不同了。不管是顺境也好、逆境也好,不管自己处在何种境遇,都要抱着积极的心态朝前看,任何时候都要拼命工作,持续努力,这才是最重要的。
