  作动词表示克制，抑制，忍住，通常的短于表达有refrain from (doing) sth。

         Please refrain from smoking in this area.
         请勿在此处吸烟。

   拓展：
   refrain作名词可以表示经常重复的话（想法），或者是老生常谈。
         Our proposal met with the constant refrain that the company could not afford it.
