last night, I watched the semifinal game toward this year's college basketball national championship between the University of Virginia (UVA) and Auburn University. They were ranked $1 and #5 respectively in the nation. Although Virginia was ranked #1 in the nation, it would be the first time ever in the school history to be in the championship game. And Auburn has the home court. That's why there was a lot of excitement in the game.
By half time, the lead had changed hands 8 times. Auburn just had a 14:2 run to lead by 3 points. Both of the teams fought hard. At 6 minutes before the end of the regulation time, UVA was leading by 10 points. It seemed that they got the game under control. But then Auburn had another 12 points run. And it was leading again by 2 points with 17 seconds left in the game.
It seems that the #1 UVA would lose the game. But they got the inbound, and their center swiftly dribbled the ball to the midfield. At this point, because of an Auburn defender did a good job guarding him, the UVA center accidentally dribbled the ball to his own heal behind him and almost lost it. Because there was not much time left in the game, he picked the ball up and took a long shot to the basket while the Auburn defender fault. There were 6.5 seconds left. Auburn leaded by 2 points.
Inbounding for the UVA. They passed the ball to their most sure hands, Kyle Guy, a 19-year-old young player who immediately shot for a 3 pointer while the end of the game bell sounded. Was the game over? No! Just as the Auburn players and couches started running around, the referee signaled that there was a fault by the Auburn player who had bumped into the UVA player Kyle while he was shotting for the final score. 0.6 second left in the game.
Now this fault is a 3 shots penalty. And Kyle Guy just went there calmly made the three shots. final results: 63:62 UVA. How did the young guy make all his shot and so calm? His mental toughness was remarkable!
Here is a quote from Tumlir: "Anything is possible. Even the word 'Impossible' is also screaming: 'I'm possible!'" So, the lesson we should learn from this is, never give up!
