Estrogen appears to be the key here, and prolactin, best known for stimulating milk production in nursing mothers, also plays a very important role, surprisingly, in fathers as well as mothers.

 When estrogen is released into the medial preoptic area, it apparently sensitizes the receptors for prolactin and for oxytocin (which is produced and released from two other regions of the hypothalamus).
