CHAPTER 10

Years passed. The seasons came and went，the short animal lives fled by. A time came when there was no one who remembered the old days before the Rebellion，except Clover， Benjamin，Moses the raven，and a number of the pigs.

很多年过去了。季节来了又去，短暂的动物生命转瞬即逝。后来，除了克拉弗、本杰明、乌鸦摩西和一些猪之外，没有人记得革命以前的日子了。

Muriel was dead； Bluebell，Jessie，and Pincher were dead. Jones too was dead—he had died in an inabriates’ home in another part of the country.  Snowball was forgotten. Boxer was forgotten，except by the few who had known him.  Clover was an old stout mare now，stiff in the joints and with a tendency【n. 倾向，趋势；癖好】 to rtheumy【adj. 阴冷的；稀粘液的；潮湿阴冷的；易引起感冒的】 eyes.  She was two years past the retiring age，but in fact no animal had ever actually retired.  The talk of setting aside a corner of the pasture for superannuated【adj. 过时的；退休的；老朽的】 animals had long since been dropped.  Napoleon was now a mature boar of twenty-four stone.  Squealer was so fat that he could with difficulty see out of his eyes. Only old Benjamin was much the same as ever，except for being a little greyer about the muzzle，and，since Boxer’s death，more morose【adj. 郁闷的；孤僻的】 and taciturn【adj. 沉默寡言的；无言的，不太说话的】 than ever.

穆丽尔死了，布鲁贝尔、杰西和平彻也死了。琼斯也死了——他死在这个国家另一个地方的一个土人家里。雪球很快就被遗忘了。除了少数几个认识他的人之外，鲍克瑟已经被人忘记了。克拉弗现在已经是一匹年老而健壮的母马了，关节僵硬，眼睛有一种患关节炎的倾向。她已经超过退休年龄两年了，但事实上没有动物真正退休过。把牧场的一角留出给年老的动物的话题早就被搁置了。拿破仑现在是一头体重二十四英石的成熟公猪。斯奎拉胖得连眼睛里的东西都看不见了。只有老本杰明和以前没什么两样，只是嘴部有点发灰了。自从鲍克瑟死后，他比以前更郁郁寡欢，更沉默寡言。
