What matters in one's childhood

They say a person's childhood determines his or her later life to a large degree. But what matters most in one's childhood? Yesterday, as I was watching the movie The Boy in the Striped Pajamas with the kids, I thought I found the best answer to this question.

There was a quote before the movie from John Betjeman,

"Childhood is measured out by sounds and smells and sights, before the dark hours of reason grows."

It strikes me deeply. I thought of my childhood with the caress of my great-grandmother and I could barely come up with detailed experiences, however, it was the senses of hearing, smelling and vision that made me feel so contented about it.

I wish when my kids are recalling their childhood, they would share the same feelings as mine. As a mother, it is a duty to bring them these warm feelings.
