Getting less sleep has become a bad habit for most American kids. According to a new survey by the National Sleep Foundation, 51% of kids aged 10 to 18 go to bed at 10 pm or later on school nights, even though they have to get up early. Last year the Foundation reported that nearly 60% of 7- to 12-year-olds said they felt tired during the day, and 15% said they had fallen asleep at school.

How much sleep you need depends a lot on your age. Babies need a lot of rest: most of them sleep about 18 hours a day! Adults need about eight hours. For most school-age children, ten hours is ideal. But the new National Sleep Foundation survey found that 35% of 10- to 12-year-olds get only seven or eight hours. And guess what almost half of the surveyed kids said they do before bedtime? Watch TV.

“More children are going to bed with TVs on, and there are more opportunities(机会) to stay awake, with more homework, the Internet and the phone,” says Dr. Mary Carskadon, a sleep researcher at Brown University Medical School. She says these activities at bedtime can zxxk get kids all excited and make it hard for them to calm down and sleep. Other experts say part of the problem is chemical. Changing levels of body chemicals called hormones not only make teenagers’ bodies develop adult characteristics, but also make it hard for teenagers to fall asleep before 11 pm.

Because sleepiness is such a problem for teenagers, some school districts have decided to start high school classes later than they used to. Three years ago, schools in Edina, Minnesota, changed the start time from 7:25 am to 8:30 am. Students, parents and teachers are pleased with the results.

分析版

Getting less sleep has become a bad habit for most American kids(getting less sleep是这句话的主语,主干结构是become a habit for sb.,意思是“什么玩意儿成为了某某人的习惯”。 According to a new survey by the National Sleep Foundation(一看the加上几个大写,就知道是一个神秘组织), 51% of kids aged 10 to 18(这里限定了年龄范围,就需要注意,以备题目中出现超出这个范围的选项) go to bed at 10 pm or later on school nights, even though they have to get up early(看来中国的小孩儿和美国的小孩儿一样,都面临这个事儿). Last year the Foundation reported that nearly 60% of 7- to 12-year-olds(注意哦,年龄的范围出现了变化) said they felt tired during the day, and 15% said they had fallen asleep at school.

How much sleep you need depends a lot on your age(depend a lot on的意思是“很大程度上取决于什么”,并不是完全取决于。 Babies need a lot of rest: most of them sleep about 18 hours a day! Adults need about eight hours. For most school-age children, ten hours is ideal(这里需要注意的是,不同年龄的人对应的睡眠时间分别是多少,这里就有可能涉及到细节选项). But the new National Sleep Foundation survey found that 35% of 10- to 12-year-olds get only seven or eight hours. And guess what almost half of the surveyed kids(看,放在人的前面作定语,就应该使用-ed结构的词,要是放在物的前面作定语呢?是哒,就是-ing结构的词) said they do before bedtime? Watch TV.

“More children are going to bed with TVs on(with TVs on当然不是在电视上面,意思是“开着电视”,on就是“开着的”状态), and there are more opportunities to stay awake, with more homework, the Internet and the phone,” says Dr. Mary Carskadon, a sleep researcher(这类学者挺有意思的,专门研究睡觉) at Brown University Medical School. She says these activities at bedtime can get kids all excited(这里的结构是get sth. done,跟前面的那个-ed放在名词前面作定语是不一样的) and make it hard for them to calm down and sleep(这里最明显的一个结构是make it + adj. +for sb. + to do sth.,意思是“对某人来说,做什么事情是很怎么样的”,这里的那个to do sth. Other experts say part of the problem is chemical(这个观点不是前面那个学者提出的哦). Changing levels of body chemicals called hormones(hormone是什么? 当然里,hormone,拼读一下就知道,这是“荷尔蒙”) not only make teenagers’ bodies develop adult characteristics, but also make it hard for teenagers to fall asleep before 11 pm.

Because sleepiness is such a problem for teenagers, some school districts(school district就是“学区”,是不是条件反射出来一个“贵”字?) have decided to start high school classes later than they used to(这里的意思是“把上学时间推迟到以前的时间之后”,是不是很感人的做法? Three years ago, schools in Edina, Minnesota, changed the start time from 7:25 am to 8:30 am(一推迟就是1个多小时啊!). Students, parents and teachers are pleased with the results(如果发生在我身上,我也会pleased).
