Theodore Dressier's masterpiece Sister Carrie, which is  Naturalism. Naturalism is a literary movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Naturalists typically viewed human beings as either the produres of "biological determinism", ruled by heterditary instincts and engaged in an endless struggle for survival, or as the product of "socioeconomic determinism", ruled by social and economic forces beyond their control.

Theodore Dressier despicts real-life subjects in a harsh light. The protagonist Sister Carrie's destiny is effected by four elements: family background, social environment, human instinct and men. The Sister Carrie, who come rich city from country. The city is cunning, filled with falsehood but definitely is a city that drive the human coming for live. Sister Carrie is interested in her charms, quick to understand the keener pleasure of life, ambitious to gain in material things but is poor and from a low-class family. When first occured in the novel, she was eighteen years of age, bright, timid, and full of the illusions of ignorance and youth.
