Etihad Airways removes 95 plastic items from a long-haul flight

Etihad Airways has flown a plane from Abu Dhabi to Brisbane with no single-use plastic on board, which the company claimed saved 50kg of plastics from going to landfill. \

In a statement, Etihad said they “identified over 95 single-use plastic products used across aircraft cabins, most of which were replaced with eco-friendly alternatives including cups, cutlery, dishes, headset bags, cart seals and toothbrushes.”

“Inaugurating 2019 with the locally sourced biofuel flight and the operation of the longest single-use plastic free flight are testament to our commitment to leading effective change towards sustainability,” he said. They ensure that all materials and products used were sustainable, including all paper products being made from 100% recycled materials. The airline said it was committing itself to remove 20 per cent of all single-use plastics on board by June 1 of this year and 80 per cent across the entire organisation by 2022.

Etihad said it was “challenging suppliers, caterers and airports to not only be supportive but more creative in coming up with viable solutions” to the problem of single-use plastics.

Microsoft says it’s time to ditch cultural fit in favour of a new way of hiring

One of the key ways that employers discern a diamond in the rough is by asking: “will this person be a good cultural fit?” It was also meant to be prove how productive a new employee would be in a particular company.

But it became a way of essentially asking – are you one of us? Microsoft’s head of global talent acquisition Chuck Edwards said that Microsoft doesn’t want to hire for a cultural fit any more.

“[It’s] not that [staff] need to fit our culture, but instead they’re adding to our culture,” said Edwards. One of the problems with hiring for cultural fit is that you just get more of the same. It isn’t specifically about increasing gender diversity, or ethnic diversity. The concern is also that businesses can easily end up with people from the same social-economic background, same school of thought or the same life experiences. Microsoft is starting to look at your lifelong skills and CV and looking for staff that have unique soft skills, such as a growth mindset, ability to trust and be trusted and admitting to a knowledge gap.

If companies are looking for diversity in the workplace, if they’re looking for a culture that is built on trust and growth, they need look no further than this. The untapped talent from this group is phenomenal, but for many, there is a clear lack of support on the business side.

Investors are looking for 3 things from Tesla's earnings

After a second half of 2018 in which Tesla finished in the black, Wall Street is expecting a money-losing quarter. The loss has been pegged at anywhere from less than $US1 per share to nearly $US2. With this knowledge, investors should be zeroing in on three key aspects of Tesla’s numbers:

1) Revenue

For the fourth quarter of 2018, Tesla brought in more than $US7 billion, a serious top-line surge. Despite Tesla’s volatility on the bottom line, the company is starting to rake in serious money. Tesla delivered about 250,000 vehicles in 2018. Those vehicles were priced between $US50,000 and $US150,000. Tesla has captured about 3% of the US market share, it can expect the same.

2) Cash

Tesla paid off a roughly $US900 million convertible bond earlier this year, depleting some of its cash balance, which was north of $US3 billion. The expectation is that operations will send Tesla’s cash reserve down to about $US1 billion by the end of the year.

3) Emission-credit sales

Tesla amasses zero-emission-vehicle (ZEV) credits because it sells only all-electric vehicles. It can sell these at any time, bringing in millions.Musk has complained about how various ZEV schemes end up discounting Tesla’s ZEVs, but they still represent a useful revenue source. Investors will likely be curious about whether Tesla sold some credits to offset an otherwise more severe loss.
