本人喜欢英文,希望在简书,更新完张爱玲的倾城之恋~

SHANGHAI'S clocks were set an hour ahead so the city could "save daylight," but the Bai family said: "We go by the old clock." Ten o'clock to them was eleven to everyone else. Their singing was behind the beat; they couldn't keep up with the huqin of life.

上海为了“节省天光”,将所有的时钟都拨快了一小时,然而白公馆里说:“我们用的是老钟,”他们的十点钟是人家的十一点。他们唱歌唱走了板,跟不上生命的胡琴。

When the huqin wails on a night of ten thousand lamps, the bow slides back and forth, drawing forth a tale too desolate for words—oh! why go into it? The tale of the huqin should be performed by a radiant entertainer, two long streaks of rouge pointing to her exquisite nose as she sings, as she smiles, covering her mouth with her sleeve ... but here it was just Fourth Master Bai sunk in darkness, sitting alone on a ramshackle balcony and playing the huqin.
胡琴咿咿哑哑拉着,在万盏灯的夜晚,拉过来又拉过去,说不尽的苍凉的故事——不问也罢!……胡琴上的故事是应当由光艳的伶人来搬演的,长长的两片红胭脂夹住琼瑶鼻,唱了、笑了,袖子挡住了嘴……然而这里只有白四爷单身坐在黑沉沉的破阳台上,拉着胡琴。

#Vocabulary#
wail
To wail is to let loose a long loud cry. If you're feeling truly miserable, take a deep breath and wail as loudly as possible.

When it comes to expressing unhappiness, wailing lies at the extreme end of the spectrum. So, it's best to save this response for life's most unpleasant moments — unless you're a jazz musician. In jazz terminology, wailing on one's instrument is actually a good thing. What's the connection between an eardrum-shattering expression of misery and a hot jam session? The answer to that question may depend on your personal musical preferences.

desolate
If you feel alone, left out, and devastated, you feel desolate. A deserted, empty, depressing place can be desolate too.

If you know the word deserted, you have a clue to the meaning of desolate, a grim word that can describe feelings and places. When a person feels desolate, he feels deserted, lonely, hopeless, and sad. When a location is desolate, there's almost nothing there. Think of a rundown cabin in the middle of nowhere, with no running water and no stores or other people anywhere. That's a desolate setting. Being in a desolate place usually makes people feel desolate.

rouge
When your grandma says she's "putting her face on" in the morning, what she means is that she's swiping lipstick on her mouth and dabbing plenty of rouge on her cheeks.

rouge is any kind of red or reddish-colored makeup that's used for tinting a person's cheeks. The word rouge can also refer to the red color itself, or it can be a verb, which you'd use to say, "Grandma, you're uneven — you forgot to rouge your left cheek."
胭脂是任何一种红色或红色的化妆品,用来给人的脸颊上色。rouge这个词也可以指红色本身,或者它可以是一个动词,你会用它来说,“奶奶,你的脸不均匀——你忘记在左脸颊上涂胭脂了。”

ramshackle
Is your house in terrible condition? Does the roof leak? Is it half tumbling down? Congratulations! It's ramshackle — in other words, in terrible condition and barely holding together.
