273、英语小故事（英汉对照）“现在就做”

When I was growing up I do not recall hearing the words“I love you” from my father. When your father never says them to you when you are a child, it gets tougher and tougher for him to say those words as he gets older.

从小到大，我不记得我父亲曾对我说过“我爱你”这句话。如果当你还是个孩子的时候，你的父亲就没有对你说过这句话，那么随着他慢慢变老，他就越来越不会将这句话说出口了。

To tell the truth, I could not honestly remember when I had last said those words to him either. I decided to set my ego aside and make the first move. After some hesitation, in our next phone conversation I blurted out the words, “Dad ... I love you！”

说实话，我也不记得我最后一次对他说这句话是什么时候了。所以我决定抛开自尊，跨出第一步。在我们下一次打电话时，犹豫了一阵之后，那几个字从我嘴里脱口而出：“爸爸……我爱你！”

There was a silence at the other end and he awkwardly replied, “Well, same back at you！”

爸爸在电话那头沉默了片刻，不好意思地回答说：“好吧，我也一样！”

I chuckled and said, “Dad, I know you love me, and when you are ready, I know you will say what you want to say.”

我笑着说：“爸爸，我知道你爱我。当你准备好了，我知道你会说出你想说的话的。”

Fifteen minutes later my mother called and nervously asked, “Paul, is everything okay?”

十五分钟后，妈妈打电话来，紧张地问：“保罗，出什么事了？”

A few weeks later, Dad concluded our phone conversation with the words, “Paul, I love you.” I was at work during this conversation and the tears were rolling down my cheeks as I finally“heard” the love.

几周后，爸爸和我打电话时，最后说了句：“保罗，我爱你。”当时我正在上班，可是当我终于“听到”爱的声音时，眼泪就情不自禁地顺着我的脸颊流了下来。

As we both sat there in tears we realized that this special moment had taken our father-son relationship to a new level.

我们都坐在那里，泪流满面，心里都明白这个特殊的时刻让我们的父子关系更为亲密了。

A short while after this special moment, my father narrowly escaped death following heart surgery. Many times since, I have pondered the thought, if I did not take the first step and Dad did not survive the surgery, I would have never“heard” the love.

这次事情过后不久，我的父亲做了一个心脏手术，死里逃生。从那以后，我经常想，如果我没有迈出第一步，如果父亲没有在手术中活下来，我就永远“听”不到爱了。

爱要及时说出口。
