inside=实际上

This wealth of new urban terraces, rural mansions and stout vicarages was shaped by a new Palladian style in which the  Classical  orders as reinterpreted by the  16th-century Italian architect Palladio were  strictly applied without the exuberant garnish of the previous Baroque and a tendency in the largest houses for style to have preference  over convenience (kitchens  could be  so far from diningrooms that the food became cold before it arrived at the table). However,  inside,flamboyant decoration was  still in  favour  and  in the  finest houses developed  into the Rococo during  the 1740s  and ’50s,with incredibly florid displays of swirling plasterwork and  carving.  

 这是去年翻译的书稿里的两句话。幸亏在正式付印之前，编辑把一些不太妥帖的地方又发回给我重译，否则就要贻笑大方了。

这里的后一句，我原来是这样译的：但骨子里，奢华的装潢依然受到青睐，到1740-50年代之间，甚而至于在过分夸饰的家庭中发展成了过度修饰的洛可可风格。（漏译了最后一小句）

对inside，我初开始把它译成了“骨子里”。待到要重译时，感觉这个“骨子里”确实译得不好。“骨子里”应该是“内心里”、“实质上”的意思。显然，“内心里”这个词义不适合。因为它的主语应该是人不是物，而这个句子的主语是flamboyant decoration是物不是人。“实质上”的意思，应该偏向于解释事物的本质，in  favour、developed into  the Rococo说的并非flamboyant decoration的本质，而是其状态和发展变化。

左思右想，感觉inside翻译成“实际上”更合乎逻辑。但又不确定，心下有些惴惴，于是乎去查inside的英英释义，果真查到一条：inreality!哈，这不就是“实际上”的意思么？！

“实际上”往往含有转折的意味，刚好和however珠联璧合。经过一番理解上的修正，译文也作了相应的调整：

但实际上，在18世纪40年代和50年代期间，奢华的装潢依然备受青睐，过分夸饰的家庭中的奢华装潢甚而至于发展成了过度修饰的洛可可风格，漩涡形的石膏天花板和雕刻装饰极尽华美。

   还有个问题，这里的时间状语是只指向flamboyantdecoration  in  the finest houses  developed into  theRococo还是指向flamboyantdecoration was  still in  favour和flamboyantdecorationinthe  finest houses developed into the Rococo两个部分？
