The team that Q works in just had 2 new interns and she happens to be their supervisor.
Today, after the lunch break, she saw that one of them was playing with her smartphone. Maybe on social network, she guessed.
Q went over and said: “I happen to have a document that needs translation. Do you have time to do it for me?”
That document was not in the assigned workload of the intern. But seeing that she had time to kill, Q decided to give her a chance to challenge herself.
“Yes, I do have time.” the intern said, “But I’m just an intern.”
Suddenly Q had no idea what to say.
Maybe this intern had read some bizarre workplace hacks.
Maybe she didn’t quite understand what an intern means.
Q didn’t know. And she didn’t have time to sort it out.
After a short and awkward silence she just said: “Yeah, right.”
And she turned around and left.
This reminded Q of her first time of being an intern. She finished her workload very quickly, too, just like this girl.
So she asked her supervisor: “Is there anything else I can help?”
And the supervisor happened to have a plan to make. But she didn’t have enough time. So she told Q to do some research and make a draft for her.
Q didn’t really understand much about that job, but still she tried to make something out of it based on her own understanding. And she tried her best to make it professional.
The supervisor was very content with the draft. Later she said: “You really saved me a lot of trouble. I don’t have to do it from scratch.”
And what’s more? She went out of her way to teach Q the details of how to optimize the plan. And Q learned a lot about the operation in the process.
Ever since then, the supervisor started to trust Q completely.
And Q got her current job all because of the supervisor’s recommendation.
Yes, Q was just an intern back then with really low income.
And to the company, she was nothing more than someone who does the chores, just like most interns nowadays.
Her job didn’t really count much for the company. As a result they didn’t plan to spend many resources on her.
She certainly could stop at just doing her everyday chores and sugar up this experience and write it on her resume after the internship ended. And for the salary she got from it, she could just use it to buy herself some quality fragments of life.
But Q didn’t do that. She chose to put in some extra effort and buy herself a better future.
Real life is not like a video game. Most of time you don’t get immediate reward or punishment for what you do.
The delay of feedback is all so common.
What you do now is not for the present, but for your chance to survive in the future.
And this is why this fight is so dangerous. All the changes happen quietly. All the choices are subtle.
But when the final result comes, you won’t even have the time to realize what’s happening.
There is a kind of poverty called shortsightedness.
It’s even more fatal than financial poverty.
Because whenever you lose some money you always have a chance to make some more.
But what you lose in this kind of poverty is opportunity. And you can never get an opportunity back once you lose it.
