Nowadays many universities and colleges offer compulsory and optional courses across a variety of disciplines. I think this policy of equipping students with a broad knowledge of many subjects is more advantageous than if students are too specialized in only one.
To begin with, acquiring a broad knowledge of many subjects makes possible a more thorough understanding of a particular subject. Knowledge is itself interconnected. Fragmental intake hinders the true digestion of one's specialized subject. Indeed, it is the amazingly extensive mastery of many disciplines as varied as performing art mathematics, literature and philosophy that enables the greatest scientists such as Einstein, Darwin and Russel to enlighten human intelligence. Indeed, they give true definition of what a real scientist should be like and what this means to all those history-making breakthroughs human knowledge.
Moreover, learning many different subjects delivers more applicable results if research is conducted interdisciplinarily. In fact, it is the trend and direction among academia to look at one subject of science with a combined perspective lent from different fields of studies. For example, translation study is encouraged to be carried out under the microscope of sociology or even ecology. Political sciences are often integrated with environmental studies and geography. And almost all disciplines need the help of computer science. Indeed, a cross-disciplinary angle opens many more doors for the development of one specific subject.
In addition, focusing on only one subject restrain it from developing further into more comprehensive and mature discipline. Too specialized knowledge discourages students to be more creative in either learning or applying what they’ve learned. Worse, it makes people more narrow-minded and easily complacent with where they are. It is thus not difficult to imagine how, without the light from other disciplines, the prospect of a specific subject can be gloomy and lifeless. After all, diversity enriches while monotony dries up.
To conclude, it is more conducive to students’ long-term development for them to have a broad knowledge of different subjects.
