断章，写在布雷克耐尔

Thy dewy looks sink in my breast;

Thy gentle words stir poison there;

Thou hast disturbed the only rest

That was the portion of despair!

Subdued to Duty's hard control,

I could have borne my wayward lot :

The chains that bind this ruined soul

Had cankered then—but crushed it not.

March, 1814

译文：

你的泪眼潜入我的胸膛；

你的甜言在那里搅入毒汁；

你扰乱了我仅有的宁静

那曾经是绝望的一部分！

服从于职责的牢固掌控，

我本可承受善变的命运。

就算束缚这残破灵魂的枷锁

都已腐烂——也不能使其屈服。

翻译手记：

lot一词，此处为命运、境遇之意，a person's luck or situation in life。

这首诗的难译之处在最后两句。

The chains that bind this ruined soul

Had cankered then—but crushed it not.

这两句诗若不断开，便是The chains that bind this ruined soul had cankered then—but crushed it not. 

that bind this ruined soul 是修饰the chains的，因此是The chains had cankered then。较前人译文理解上有所不同，故这两句诗我译为：

就算束缚这残破灵魂的枷锁

都已腐烂——也不能使其屈服。

柔声蜜语仍在搅动毒鸩，

你打扰过我仅有的和平宁静，

那曾经是绝望的一部分；

倘若是顺从本份严厉的拘束，

我原可任凭命运的摆布，

折磨，却未能使它降伏。
