今天经济学人上有一篇关于新闻自由的文章

The global slump in press freedom

首先文章标题中slump一词,

slump:

1. 倒下,倚,靠 to fall or lean against something because you are not strong enough to stand

slump against/over/back

eg: She slumped against the wall. 她身子一歪倚在了墙上。

2. 暴跌 to suddenly go down in price, value, or number

eg: The currency slumped to a record low. 币值跌到了历史低点。

3. 趋势减弱 a sudden decrease in prices, sales, profits

eg: Under the new regime, all sheep and cattle will be regularly tested for disease.

clamp down 打压、压制

eg: The police are clamping down on drink-driving offenders.

警察正在打压酒后驾车的罪犯。

clamp:

1. 夹住 to put or hold something in a position so that it cannot move

eg: She clamped her hands over her ears.

2. 制裁、处罚 clamp sanctions/restrictions etc on somebody

to put limits on what someone is allowed to do

eg: The president clamped sanctions on the island after the bomb attack.

总统在炸弹袭击后对该岛实施了制裁。
