Léon Spilliaert was a Belgian symbolist painter and graphic artist. From childhood, he displayed an interest in art and drawing. A prolific doodler and autodidact, he was predominantly a self-taught artist. Sickly and reclusive, he spent most of his youth sketching scenes of ordinary life and the Belgian countryside. When he was 21, he went to work in Brussels for Edmond Deman, a publisher of the works of symbolist writers, which Spilliaert was to illustrate. He especially admired the work of Edgar Allan Poe. Watercolor, gouache, pastel, and charcoal—often in combination—were the means by which he produced many of his best works.

On the edge of a monumental staircase sits a young woman. Although she is still, her gaze is absorbed by the movements of the water. The arabesque lines fascinate and charm her. She is only a step away from becoming one with infinity. The artist unites the forms of the bather and the water surface by giving an almost abstract play of shapes. Lines, surfaces, and colors eliminate the anecdote and turn this image into an icon: man on the edge between solid and fluid.

We present today's masterpiece thanks to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. :)
