Cell wall

A cell wall is a rigid, semi-permeable structure that surrounds the cell membrane in certain types of cells, such as those found in plants, bacteria, fungi, and algae. It provides structural support, protection, and shape to the cell, while also allowing the transport of molecules and communication with other cells.

The composition of cell walls varies among different organisms, but they are generally made up of complex carbohydrates, proteins, and other molecules.

• In plants, the cell wall is primarily composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin.
• In bacteria, the cell wall is made of peptidoglycan (also known as murein) which is a polymer of sugars and amino acids.
• In fungi, the cell wall contains chitin, a polymer of glucose molecules, in addition to other components.
