Lesson 47 A thirsty ghost 嗜酒的鬼魂

A public house which was recently bought by Mr Ian Thompson is up for sale. Mr Thompson is going to(计划..) sell it because it is haunted. He told me that he could not go to sleep one night because he heard a strange noise coming from the bar. The next morning, he found that the doors had been blocked by chairs and the furniture had been moved. Though Mr Thompson had turned the lights off before he went to bed, they were on in the morning. He also said that he had found five empty whisky bottles which the ghost must have drunk the night before. When I suggested that some villagers must have come in for a free drink, Mr Thompson shook his head. The villagers have told him that they will not accept the inn even if he gives it away.

From Ian Thompson's View:

Not sooner had I bought a pub in a small village than I was going to sell it because it is haunted. Last night, I couldn't 'fall in'[=> go to] sleep because I heard strange noises coming from downstairs. I got such a fright that I failed to get down to see what was happening. I was sure that the ghosts had drunk here because five empty whisky bottles were found in[=> on] the spot today morning. The door was blocked by some chairs and the lights were all on although I had turn them off last night. The villagers said they would not accept this inn even if it is free. One of my friends had suggested that some villagers must have come in and have a free drink but I was still going to sell it.

Knowledges

From A villager's View:

The pub which had been bought two weeks ago was up for sale again. Ian Thompson is its forteenth owner 'for'[=> ''] this year. Why had it been bought and sold ''[=>again and again]? Because it is a haunted house. Is it really haunted? No, no, no. There are no ghosts in 'this'[=> the] world! On Saturday nights, we, about four men, always have dressed like ghosts and went into the inn and had a drink. We all know the owner lives upstairs. In order to frighten him not to disturb our drinking, we have been talking and singing songs like ghosts. 'Some dare men have been able'[=> Some men have been courageous enough to] to 'walk'[=> come] down 'slowly'[=> step by step] 'with a stick'[=> with fear] to see what have been happening. They often have been holding a stick or a knife, but they all have been frightened by us and have ran back upstairs. And then, as you know, they put the pub up for sale the next day.
