Our basic nature is to be curious and self directed. If you believe in the "mediocrity of the masses", then mediocrity becomes the ceiling on what you could achieve. We should focus our efforts on creating environments for our innate psychological needs to flourish... The main motivator is the freedom, challenge, and purpose of the undertaking itself.
