The Lion,the Witch an
Deep Magic from the Dawn of Time中的the down of time就是远古时代,开天辟地之意。
When he had been made to walk far further than he had ever known that anybody could walk, the Witch at last halted in a dark valley all overshadowed with fir trees and yew trees.
eg. Suddenly he halted as though his mind were made up.
yew trees紫杉
Edmund simply sank down and lay on his face doing nothing at all and not even caring what was going to happen ...
lay on his face
在爱德华奇妙旅行中有一句话,he was on his back, staring up at the night, sky.
Then, stomach down on the bed, he began to draw.
Your friends crossed after the flood had passed and they found you lying on your face at the top of the bank, with a broken sword under you.
“Perhaps the Wolf will smell us out and bring us news,” said the Witch.
“It cannot be good news if he does,” said the dwarf.
smell out: sniff out 嗅出
No news is good news.
What difference would that make now that He is here?
eg.Now that everyone is here, let's start.
“It will be a long time now before the Stone Table can again be put to its proper use,” said the dwarf.
it will be +时间+before固定句型“......以后才......”(may be同样适用)否定在be前+not即可。
There need be no flying. Go quickly. Summon all our people to meet me here as speedily as they can. Call out the giants and the werewolves and the spirits of those trees who are on our side. Call the Ghouls, and the Boggles, the Ogres, and the Minotaurs. Call the Cruels, the Hags, the Specters, and the people of the Toadstools.
there need be no+n
eg. There need be no ceremony between us .
这一句生词较多,giant(巨人),werewolf(狼人),the spirits of those trees (即dryads树精),ghoul(食尸鬼),boggle(妖怪),ogre(食人魔),hag(女巫婆),toadstool(毒蘑菇)这些词基本上在国外魔幻童话中较常见,不算生僻,不过日常极少用到。
“Prepare the victim,” said the Witch.
eg.The rest will fall victim to predators, starvation, and the elements.
I didn’t see her after I knocked the knife out of her hand …A chap can’t mind everything at once…
knock the knife out of her hand表示撞出去,此处可同义knock off the knife。
A chap can’t mind everything at once翻译是一个人不可能面面俱到,mind 此处有take care的意思
chap: brit, informal A chap is a man or boy.
For it was part of her magic that she could make things look like what they aren’t, and she had the presence of mind to do so at the very moment when the knife was knocked out of her hand.
have the presence of mind
at the very moment就在那非常的一瞬间,有点千钧一发的感觉,不过千钧一发豹豹一直用的是at the critical moment,也只记得这个词组。
There is no need to tell you (and no one ever heard) what Aslan was saying, ...
there is no need to do已经反复出现在此书中,包括下文there is no need to talk to him about what is past.(过去就过去了)
But before they had time to feel really awkward one of the leopards approached Aslan and said,...
approach v.
Let him approach,” said Aslan.
“Sire, there is a messenger from the enemy who craves audience.”
Sire
crave v.
“The Queen of Narnia and Empress of the Lone Islands desires a safe conduct to come and speak with you,” said the dwarf, “on a matter which is as much to your advantage as to hers.”
“Queen of Narnia, indeed!” said Mr. Beaver. “Of all the cheek—”
as much to your advantage as to hers,
as +adj + as的结构,表示“和…
be to one's advanyage
of all the cheek
All names will soon be restored to their proper owners.
I think the same idea had occurred to the leopards themselves; at any rate, as they walked off their fur was all standing up on their backs and their tails were bristling—like a cat’s when it sees a strange dog.
I think the same idea had occurred to the leopards themselves;
It had occurred to me that this shadow of a garage must be a blind and that sumptuous(means rich and superior in quality ) and romantic apartments were concealed overhead when the proprietor himself appeared in the door of an office, wiping his hands on a piece of waste.
it (had) occurred to me that... = it (had) dawned on me that...
at any rate 无论如何
All the hair on its back stoop up on end.
It was the oddest thing to see those two faces - the golden face and the dead-white face so close together. Not that the Witch looked Aslan exactly in his eyes; Mrs Beaver particularly noticed this.
odd古怪的,strange and unusual
There's an odd number of candidates.(释义来自柯林斯)
the dead-white face 惨白的脸色(:pale)
The Witch looked Aslan exactly in his eyes不是最怪的事,(最怪的是两者的对比)
that human creature is mine. His life is forfeit to me. His blood is my property.
be forfeit to sb.
You know that every traitor belongs to me as my lawful prey and that for every treachery I have a right to a kill.同义
“do you really think your master can rob me of my rights by mere force? He knows the Deep Magic better than that. He knows that unless I have blood as the Law says all Narnia will be overturned and perish in fire and water.”
by mere force仅仅靠武力(only by force)
rob sb.of sth.
类似deprive sb. of sth剥夺
overturn 推翻
unless I have blood as the Law says 即上文说的every traitor belongs to her as her lawful prey.
