A Blue Moon is when two full moons happen in the same calendar month; lunar eclipses occur when the moon passes into Earth's shadow; and supermoons happen when the moon's perigee[1] — its closest approach to Earth in a single orbit — coincides with a full moon. In this case, the supermoon also happens to be the day of the lunar eclipse.

[1]perigee: the point in its orbit around the earth when the moon or an artificial satellite is nearest the earth 近地点

apogee: The apogee of something such as a culture or a business is its highest or its greatest point.

A blue moon refers to the second full moon in a month. Typically, a blue moon happens every two years and eight months.

The first full moon of January  occurred on the night of Jan. 1 or the morning of Jan. 2, depending on your location. The second full moon and the lunar eclipse will occur on the night of Jan. 31 or the morning of Feb. 1.And the supermoon will take place on the night of Jan. 30, which is technically one day before the moon reaches peak fullness, but even NASA is willing to call the event a supermoon nonetheless.

On Jan. 31, not every place on Earth will see the Blue Moon this month, because the second full moon of January won't technically appear in those places until Feb. 1. These places include regions in eastern Asia and eastern Australia, where skywatchers won't see the first full moon until Jan. 2 and the next full moon until the morning of Feb. 1. For example, in Melbourne, Australia, the full moon arrives on Jan. 2 at 1:24 p.m. local time, and the next full moon is on Feb. 1 at 1:26 a.m., so skywatchers will technically miss the Blue Moon by less than 2 hours.

The event is causing a buzz because it combines three unusual lunar events -- an extra big super moon, a blue moon and a total lunar eclipse.

"It's an astronomical trifecta[2]," said Kelly Beatty, a senior editor at Sky and Telescope magazine.

[2]trifecta:a form of betting in which the punter selects the first three place-winners in a horse race in the correct order

This full moon is also the third in a series of "supermoons," which happen when the moon is closest to Earth in its orbit. This point, called the perigee, makes the moon appear 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter.

cosmic event not seen in 36 years -- a rare "super blood blue moon" -- may be glimpsed[3] January 31 in parts of western North America, Asia, the Middle East, Russia and Australia.

[3]glimpse

1) [v] to see someone or something for a moment without getting a complete view of them  一瞥,看一眼

I glimpsed a figure at the window.

2) [v] to begin to understand something for a moment

For the first time she glimpsed the truth about her sister.

3) [n] a quick look at someone or something that does not allow you to see them clearly  一瞥,瞟一眼  [+ of]

They caught a glimpse of a dark green car.

brief/fleeting/quick glimpse (= a very short look)

We only had a fleeting glimpse of the river.

4) [v] a short experience of something that helps you begin to understand it  短暂的感受,短暂的体验 [+ of/into/at ]

a glimpse of what life might be like in the future

According to Sky and Telescope magazine, "the last time a complete lunar cover-up took place on the second full moon of the month was December 30, 1982, at least as reckoned by local time in Europe, Africa, and western Asia -- locations where the event could be seen."

That event also occurred at the moon's orbital perigee, making it an extra bright supermoon.

The next supermoon lunar eclipse visible throughout all of the United States will be January 21, 2019 -- though that one will not be a blue moon.
