20190427 issue第2题 只要城市发现社会特征
To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities.
Cities are more attracting due to their diversity culture and modern civilization.People are holding different opinions on whether these cities characters can reveal the whole countries’ ones. While it is reasonable to assume that citiesto be paramount, I appreciate rural as well. All of these areas characteristics contribute to the merits of culture.
I have to admit, major cities sometimes can be the culture centers of a country. After researching these cities, which locate in developed areas, people may have an overall understanding about the whole social characteristics, after all metropolitans are acting as the culture and economic centers. For example, economically developed New York emphasis culture diversity, Tokyo as the capital of Japan can represent Japanese culture. On the other hand, people from all kinds of fields in the city can also reveal the situation from different angles. Cities’ celebrities regarded as role model of cities spiritual civilization. Talking with them can deep their understanding about these social problems and characters. However, the author rely on a fact that cities can represent the whole country’s situation. Neither is it possible that every culture tradition and peoples’ wisdom are concentrated on these cities.
While I cannot turn a blind eye on the significance of these cities, I am hesitate to hastily generalize all kinds of characters in the same way. With the fast pace of globalization, modern cities are becoming increasingly similar than ever before, and differences between two distinctive cities are rarely figured out. In such scenario, great cities can not represent their country. For supporting example, Shanghai is almost the same with New York in terms of high-rise buildings and people’s living pressure. Thereby, it is ridiculous to conclude that China and America share the same social characters. Further more, modern lifestyle and high pressure have made their characters changed into the trepidationof incomes and works. Unlike those who live in a countryside, citizens havelose their previous behavior patterns and live style.
More importantly, social charactersdoes not necessarily reflected in the major sties. In fact, the merit of socialis primarily embodied in the processes of producing and working, as well as therepresentation of their inner world. Such processes remain exclusive to thosewho keeps the former living habits; likewise, their unique personal experiencecan alienates his/her from other conventions. Thus, social characters can alsoexhibited in countryside due to China’s areas difference. The essence ofculture characters can be reflected in rural, in part of low speed of cultural transition. The Yi culture in Banan, for example, still uses hieroglyphs. Beijing, possessing many ancient buildings, was the capitalof many dynasties. Especially for developing countries, small cities can alsoreflect all aspects of a society. For China which is of great geography difference, it is unrealistic to use a simple way to describeall the characters.
To summarize, while we may feel a sense of closeness withthe urban civilization, cities characters can not be represented. To gain a betterunderstanding, we should consider different methods, we can only researchcities for developed countries, and both rural and cities are important fordeveloping and under developed countries.
