Reflection

In the first part of Chapter 5, William Zinsser assumed that we should write for ourselves and not visualize significantly numerous  audiences. Then he utilized "craft" and "attitude" to explain the paradox issue which he pointed out by himself. In addition, he gave the method to cope with, which is mastering tools, being yourself all the time.

In the second large part of Chapter 5, William Zinsser provided three fantastic examples to address the importance of "writing for yourself". Three writing styles have totally different characteristics:

"The Hen" written by E.B.White shows  us a countryside scenario and author's simply rustic emotion with his hen, no matter readers interested it or not. Also, William Zinsser shared his own experience in 1907, he was laughed at and then it was his turn to cackle.

While, Mencken is another style. He insist revealed the hypocrisy of Prohibition and the indifference of Christian and pastors, whatever even he was treated as heresy in the 1920s. In fact, what he was loyal to himself achieved the influences later in America. (I really love the "tripping down"description.)

The third one is about a teacher, Herndon used his earnest way to communicate with his stubborn student Piston. I can see all the expression from Herndon was ordinary but it was genuine, too. The teacher is just the teacher, the confrontations are there, and the tendentious conversation is obvious, too. But the teacher Herndon still receive significantly quantity of audiences.

In the last part of Chapter 5, William Zinsser used question to encourage writers to be tendentious and loyal to themselves. It is because the writer is the only on audience.

说是reflection,其实更像是我对chapter5的理解,理解错误的地方还望大家直接指出!
