Global Goals - Fight Poverty
At school, we are learning about the SDG's, Sustainable Development Goals. They are a set of goals that the United Nations and we are trying to achieve by 2030. Some basic history of these goals and how they came about. In 2000, the UN created eight world goals called the Millennium Development Goals. These goals were meant to be reviewed in 2015 and after the revision, the goals would finish, the program would stop running.

Later in the year, they created the SDG’s. These goals would be similar to the Millennium goals but with extra thought added on and using their reflections on the MDG Goals, they would act on that. In 15 years they would review the SDG’s and probably create even more goals. From the 8 MDG Goals, they evolved to a 17 SDG Goals.
These are the goals:
1. No Poverty
2. Zero Hunger
3. Good Health and Well-Being
4. Quality Education
5. Gender Equality
6. Clean Water and Sanitation
7. Affordable and Clean Energy
8. Decent Work and Economic Growth
9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
10. Reduced Inequalities
11. Sustainable Cities and Communities
12. Responsible Consumption and Production
13. Climate Action
14. Life Below Water
15. Life on Land
16. Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
17. Partnerships for the Goals
At our class, we studied the first Global Goal. Poverty.

To the people who are reading this, you are probably fortunate enough to have a house to live in and food in your stomach, but may not know what poverty is, because you aren't affected by it. By the Google definition, poverty is...
1. the state of being extremely poor.
2. the state of being inferior in quality or insufficient in amount.
This means that the readers of this article probably aren't in poverty. But the people who are in poverty are very unfortunate. They are children and adults whose home have been destroyed from the barrages of war. They flee to temporary shelters set up by the donating foundations, like World Vision, Oxfam, UNICEF and Red Cross. Lucky families live off of $40 per week (money donated by the organisations) and some live off none.
Facts of poverty:
1. Half the world is in poverty. That is over three billion people in poverty with no home to live in and no food to eat.
2. It is estimated by UNICEF that 22,000 kids die every day due to poverty.
3. Over 550 billion dollars was spent by the US to try help poverty, but that still wasn't enough.

4. Preventable diseases like diarrhoea and pneumonia kill 2 million children a year because they don't have sufficient health care and medical attention.
5. Oxfam estimates that it would take $60 billion annually to end extreme global poverty - that's less than 1/4 the income of the top 100 richest billionaires.
So now you see the severeness of world poverty. Help these kids by conserving the things you use and if you can, donate to foundations that support poverty.
What did these kids do to deserve this?
Nothing.
