Why does the ideaof progress loom so large in the modern world? Surely because progress of aparticular kind is actually taking place around us and is becoming moreand  more manifest．Although mankind  has  undergone no general  improvement in intelligenceor morality, it has made extraordinary progress in the accumulation ofknowledge．Knowledge began to increase as soon as the

thoughts of one individual could be communicated to another by means of speech．With the invention of writing, a great

advance was made, for knowledge could then be not only communicated but also

stored．Libraries made education possible, and

education in its turn added to libraries: the growth of knowledge followed a

kind of compound interest law, which was greatly enhanced by the invention of

printing．All this was comparatively slow until, with

the coming of science, the tempo was suddenly raised．

练习感悟：这篇文章虽然生词不多，但是比较长，而且读起来也比较拗口，所以录了三遍左右才达标。不过回想起我刚开始读的那阵子，现在对于新概念英语的朗读，实在是进步很大了，去年这个时候，我读新概念都经常要花两个多小时，读起来结结巴巴的，非常困难，今年读新概念4都能比较得心应手了。
