To be honest I didn’t quite understand the word “hometown” until I got into university, before that, all that I knew was that maybe “hometown” is just a place where I live, or in other words, where I grew up. When I graduated high school, all that I have ever wanted is to get away as far as possible, so-called to be a real “adult” and to be independent.

My hometown is Urumqi, the capital of XinJiang. I came all along the way across the whole country to the city where im staying now, which took me 5 hours to fly. I started to live a new life and get to make new friends, and I still remember the shocking expression on people’s face when I told them where I am from,“It’s such a long distance!”, this is how the conversations usually got started. Then they would usually begin to ask me bunch of questions which would take me a lot of time to explain and to clarify, but the most circumstances are that a lot of people still couldn’t understand what my life is like because in lots of people’s minds,XinJiang has been stereotyped as a “mysterious place” which could be much of a confusing and misleading conception for people to take.

I’d like to call it as a multicultural city since there are just so many different peoples there who speak completely different languages and with different religions and diverse cultural backgrounds. There is no certain type of what “XinJiang people” is like, because there are just so many peoples there, he or she could be Han,Uygur, Kazak and etc. And also XinJiang is a mixture of modern life and the most primitive nature, there are people who ride a bus and live in an apartments just like what people do in any other parts of the country, at the same time, there are also people who live in a yurt and pasture to make a living, any single of them couldn’t tell what life in XinJiang is like, but together we make a whole family. Similarly, besides the skyscrapers in the city, the steppe and forests here could also give you a chance to embrace nature. The food there maybe the most exciting part to tell, people there have different roots, so the cuisine there is a combination of different origins and you are sure to find the one you like to satisfy your taste buds. To tell the truth, words will never be enough to cover the picture there in XinJiang, there are a lot more worth exploring about this place and you won’t be disappointed.

Here I am, writing something about my hometown. In my mind, it’s more than the food and the scenery. I think now I could explain what hometown is like, it is far more than the place where you grew up, it is the nest where you heart belongs to, it is the book stocked with your stories, it is a sweet dream that you would smile if you dream about it when you sleep, it is your lover that you could be proud to introduce to people, it is your advocate that always stands up for you, the bond in between you and your hometown will stay forever no matter how far you go away, it is the place you call home.
