A rescue dog has been hailed for its loyalty and bravery after getting infected on all of its paws while searching for people trapped in a collapsed quarantine hotel.
The six-year-old English Springer Spaniel named Bei Bei was among the first to arrive at the scene after the 66-room hotel collapsed on Saturday evening in Fujian Province of southeastern China.
It had worked non-stop for three days before having to receive treatment for its injuries.
Yi Wenbing, the firefighter who raised Bei Bei, said the dog managed to find six survivors, including three people within the first 15 minutes of the rescue operation.
'The surroundings [of the rescue site] were extremely rough. There were sharp iron pieces and broken glasses everywhere,' Mr Yi told The Beijing News.
'Yesterday afternoon we noticed that Bei Bei was moving more slowly and found cuts on all of its paws,' he added.
A video shows Bei Bei and a group of firefighters searching for survivors under the hotel remains in the dark.
Sixty-two people have been rescued from the hotel's remains as of 4pm local time today
A rescue force of over 1,000 people - including firefighters, police forces and other emergency responders - arrived at the site on Saturday night, according to government officials.
Fujian Firefighting Department said they rescued at least three children, including one toddler, at around midnight Sunday.
The search is still ongoing with nine rescue dogs on the scene.
The Xinjia Hotel in Quanzhou city was recently converted to a quarantine facility for people who had recent contact with coronavirus patients before it toppled at around 7:15pm on March 7.
Bei Bei has been removed from the rescue works to rest after the firefighters treated its infections.
A clip shows a firefighter wrapping bandages on the English Springer Spaniel's four paws.
The rescue dog has been hailed as a hero after the story had been shared on Chinese social media.
'Even though it's a little puppy who can't talk, it's a hero who is willing to save humans' lives,' a comment read.
'Dogs are humans' best friends forever! Please treat them with kindness,' one user wrote on Chinese Twitter-like Weibo.
Another one said: 'They are extraordinary fighters too, have a good rest, Bei Bei.'
'Salute to the firefighters and Bei Bei. Please respect every single life, even if they are just animals.'
