With the development of our living standard, education becomes one of the hottest topics around the world. This can be illustrated by the soaring increase in the number of students who entered universities in recent years. Though nearly all people realize how important tertiary education is, they still hold different understandings on the role that universities played.
Some people aim to get a good job after graduation. They insist that students in universities should get prepared for employment so that they can easily get a job after graduation. This can decrease the unemployment rate and reduce the burden of the public's welfare. It can also bring quantities of tax income for the government's financial, which can be used to support some disadvantaged aspects, such as pension and health care.
While others hold an opposite opinion. They believe universities should not be oriented by employment. University should cultivate researchers, instead of skilled technicians. Focusing on employment too much may hamper students to acquire the theoretical knowledge. This knowledge may seem no use in the practical, but it illustrates why technology can solve a certain problem. It can also guide researchers to develop more advanced technologies.
Despite all these considerations, I believe the latter opinion. Universities should be a place for providing academic findings. It is TAFE that should be responsible for training skilled technicians for employers.
范文:
Nowadays, what should be the main purpose of a university is an ongoing debate. Some people believe that universities should put more emphasis on academic knowledge, while others argue that universities should provide pupils with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace.
Universities are educational institutes. And the basic function of education is to help students to acquire basic knowledge and apply them to work effectively. It is not doubting that theoretical knowledge is not only essential but the main foundation for any professional career. Students with established knowledge allow them to gain professional insight. Moreover, when applying for a job position, most employers prefer to recruit people who have certain knowledge about the job they are applying.
On the other hand, competition at work has become really intense. More people are qualified for the same job, which has led many graduates to work as interns without a proper salary despite their many years of education. Therefore, universities should give their students full preparations for their future career choice in order to excel professionally. For instance, teach students how to get a job by giving them lessons on interview techniques, what makes a good resume, help them to understand how to operate once they have joined an organization and opportunities to work as trainees in an organization. Consequently, it also has advantages for universities. For example, graduates from a certain university that can better use their academic knowledge and skills are preferred by employers. As a result, they will have preferences at recruiting new staffs from the same university.
In conclusion, I believe universities should fulfil both roles, by providing the necessary knowledge to their students and career-oriented skills, in order to make them more tenacious, confident and mature for the job-related challenges in the future.
