Night of the Lantern Festival

东风夜放花千树。

Thousands of trees with festive lanterns were just like blooming in the east wind at night

更吹落、星如雨。

With a rain of sparks and fireworks.

宝马雕车香满路。

Luxury carriages ran on the road with fragrance drifting around.

凤箫声动，玉壶光转，一夜鱼龙舞。

Music by the flute came drifting around,the moon shining bright and fish-and-dragon lanterns dancing all night long.

蛾儿雪柳黄金缕。

Beauties with valuable jewelry and hidden fragrance

笑语盈盈暗香去。

Were talking and laughing merrily and lightheartedly.

众里寻他千百度。

Having searched for her in vain in crowds hundreds of times,

蓦然回首，那人却在，

Suddenly I turned about only to find my beloved girl was there

灯火阑珊处。

By the dim lantern light.

【译文】

东风吹得焰火纷飞如雨，如同千树万树花盛开。豪华马车满路飘香。悠扬的箫声四处回荡，一轮明月渐渐西斜，整夜鱼灯龙灯飞舞。

美人们佩戴着亮丽的饰物，笑语盈盈，香气飘洒，随着人群去。我在人群中寻找她千百回，猛然回头，却发现她就在灯火零落之处。

【注释】

1. 元夕：正月十五元宵节，又称上元、元夕。

2. 花千树：花灯之多如千树开花。

3. festive lantern 花灯

4. bloom [bluːm] 开花

5. spark  火花 fireworks 烟花，爆竹

6. 星如雨：焰火纷纷乱落如雨。

7. 宝马雕车：(luxury carriage)豪华马车。

8. 凤箫：箫的美称。(flute 长笛)

9. 玉壶：比喻明月。

10. 鱼龙舞：鱼形、龙形的彩灯在飞舞。(dragon 龙)

12. 蛾儿、雪柳、黄金缕，皆妇女头上佩戴的各种饰物。(jewelry 首饰）

13. 盈盈：声音轻盈悦耳。

14. 暗香：(hidden fragrance)女性们身上散发出来的香气。

15. 他：泛指第三人称，古时 “他” 和“她”不分。

16. 阑珊：暗淡，零落。(dim 暗淡)
