If birds also have a red carpet ceremony, the crowned umbrella bird will undoubtedly be the brightest star. The male is dressed in a bright orange-red costume, with a large crown feather on his head that almost obscures his beak.
However, they are not only "stars" with outstanding appearances, but also "dancers" with excellent dance skills. Known for their dramatic courtship dances, the Andean crested umbrella bird and the Guyana crested umbrella bird are the "eye-catchers" of the bird kingdom. In contrast, females are much more low-key and have tan plumage that helps them hide their figure.
During the breeding season, males gather at the courtship arena, a lively display where they jump, chirp and shake their heads. The female watches, picks out the best dancers, mates and flies away, creating a concave mud nest on the rock face. Females usually lay two white eggs, have an incubation period of 25 to 28 days, and raise their young alone. The Andean crested umbrella bird inhabits the cloud forests of the Andes Mountains, preferring densely vegetated and fruit-rich areas, and is found in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.
As fruit eaters, they feed primarily on fruits and help forests disperse seeds during the foraging process, playing a key role in the maintenance of ecosystems. In addition, they occasionally prey on insects and small vertebrates.
