M just quit his job.

He hasn’t already found another company which has promised to take him. So the situation feels quite complicated for him. But generally, he feels more relief than regrets.

No, don’t get me wrong. He was not running for his life from a small run-down company or a pyramid selling organization.

In fact, the company which he worked for was a famous major corporation with good employee benefits. He had planned to work there until his retirement, if possible.

However, although it was not a big deal to manage the workload or the fluctuation of the industry, it was totally impossible for him to tolerate the corporate culture.

When he was still in his introduction training, he was asked by the company to take a photo for his employee ID card.

It took him quite a few times to finally successfully produce a qualified photo, because the supervisor kept not seeing his photo as positive enough.

Eventually, after another few times, M finally got this photo on which he was posing a stereotype canned smile which you usually see on a commercial.

This photo of his was hung on the wall of the section which he worked in, along with his detailed information as an employee.

Beside it, there were 20 more photos of other employees with the same kind of smile.

Under every photo, one could see a personalized “motto”. And M’s was “This city witnesses my strive.”

That was not really what he wanted to put there. The sentence was chosen under the suggestion of his supervisor.

He himself was going to use the quote of Socrates which says: “Unexamined life is not worth living.”

But the supervisor thought it was totally without any positive energy.

This worship towards positive energy dwells in every corner of this company.

Every time the CEO gives a speech it would definitely be full of emotions.

The company regularly calls upon the employees to read all kinds of success books.

Some section even has the routine of shouting positive slogans. It looks just like something you see every morning in front of some real estate agency stores.

And the company does not tolerate any negative emotion. Those employees who are seen as negative would even get a 1-on-1 due to this.

And when you discuss about day-to-day operation there, talking about beliefs always works better than discussing about specific problems.

M was totally horrified by this.

What’s worse is that a lot of companies and schools really buy this kind of stuff. And they make people repeat them day by day.

But the truth is that more than half of a person’s life does not usually go as we wish.

Those who tries so hard to appear positive are usually those who feel totally not secured deep down in their hearts.

This is just like that those who put on real efforts to show people how rich they are are usually not the real rich people. Or their wealth and social status are usually neither stable nor recognized.

These weird behaviors all come from a defensive mechanism that roots in humans’ intuition. This mechanism is called denial.

When feeling threatened by something, most people’s first action would be to deny the existence of the threats.

It’s like when you lack some ability but can’t bear to admit that you lack it, the most efficient solution you can come up with would be to deny the righteousness of this ability without any reason.

This is totally not healthy.

It’s harmful to let any single emotion dominate one’s mind for too long, even if it’s a positive emotion.

What you truly need is the diversity of emotions.

We need those positive emotions, because they drive us forward when we need to.

But we also need to have the liberty to express those negative emotions, because they are part of who we are. They are our natural needs.

Suppressing them by force would only push us farther away on the way of alienation and eventually turn us into monsters which even we ourselves cannot recognize.

But sadly, the blue side of life has been usually buried too deep.
