#2024.1.27 Infinite Possibilities: Reflections and Mourning
Don't ever think the bell tolls for anyone else, it tolls for you. - Ernest Hemingway
Upon logging into WeChat, there is a picture of a person standing outside the Earth, looking down at it. As he gazes at the planet, his imagination takes flight:
What if I had been born on the American continent? What kind of life would I have led? What about Australia? Asia? Africa? The Arctic or Antarctica? Well, let's not go to any too-cold places.
What if I had been born into a wealthy family? What kind of life would I be living now? Or in a slum? In a peaceful country? A war-torn region? Well, the thought of war-torn regions is enough to make my heart race. The mere thought of gunshots and explosions is enough to make me shudder. I'm not going there.
It seems like I had so many choices, and life held so many possibilities.
In the end, however, after much choosing, I became what I am now.
One day, while walking down the street, looking around at the people and things around me, I didn't see anyone else. All I saw were the other possibilities that I didn't choose.
Suddenly, the sound of distant funeral bells filled the air, and I stopped in my tracks to mourn deeply. They were tolling for me.
