The Intelligent Transport team at Newcastle University have turned an electric car into a mobile laboratory named"Drive LAB"in order to understand the challenges faced by older drivers and to discover where the key stress points are.

Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key reasons for a fall in health and well-being among older people, leading to them becoming more isolated and inactive.

Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing in-vehicle technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life.

These include custom-made navigation tools, night vision systems and intelligent speed adaptations.Phil Blythe explains:"For many older people, particularly those living alone or in the country, driving is important for preserving their independence, giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others."

"But we all have to accept that as we get older our reactions slow down and this often results in people avoiding any potentially challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to."

Dr Amy Guo,the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains,"The DriveLAB is helping us to understand what the key stress points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technology to address these problems. "For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone else but surprisingly,we found that in 30mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed and so were more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of getting fined. We're looking at the benefits of systems which control their speed as a way of preventing that.

"We hope that our work will help with technological solutions to ensure that older drivers stay safer behind the wheel."

...) team at Newcastle University have turned an electric car into a mobile laboratory(turn...into... 变成...”,这帮子人是把一辆电车变成了一个移动实验室) named “DriveLAB” in order to understand the challenges faced by older drivers(注意,这不是“老司机”,而是指“年级较大的司机”。那么,就文章主题而言,服务的对象有了) and to discover where the key stress points are.

Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key reasons for a fall in health and well-being(这里提出了他们分析出的老同志们不开车的原因,就是健康方面和生活安康方面出现了问题) among older people, leading to them becoming more isolated and inactive(lead to的意思是“导致”。 Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing in-vehicle(in vehicle从字面上看就是“在车里”,中间加上一个连字符,就是“车载的”) technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life(这句话的信息量挺大,谁、为了什么目的、做了什么,都说清楚了,读到这种句子,请拿出小铅笔,都几个部分都划一划,以备题目涉及).

These include custom-made(custom就是“顾客”,那么这个custom-made就是“为了顾客而制造的”,也就是“定制的”) navigation(这个词是“导航”的意思,你好意思说不认识吗?) tools, night vision systems and intelligent speed adaptations(提问:一共几种能力? Phil Blythe explains: “For many older people, particularly those living alone or in the country(这里的country不是国家,通过后面一句话就可以知道,指的应该是住得比较远的老同志,所以这里的country是“乡村”), driving is important for preserving their independence, giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others(看,又来了,3个目的!所以,请注意一下哦).”

“But we all have to accept that as we get older our reactions slow down and this often results in people avoiding any potentially challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in their driving skills(挺长的一句话,不过不用怕,找准主谓宾或者主系表,就一切OK。首先句子的大主干是“我们必须接受什么”。那么,接受了什么呢?请看that引导的这个宾语从:1、“我们老了之后,反应能力会下降”;2、这会导致“老同志们去回避任何有可能存在的驾车方面的风险”;3、还会使得“老同志们对于自己的驾车技术失去信心”。仔细看一下就能知道,avoiding和losing这两个-ing是并列跟在results in后面的). The result is that people stop driving before they really need to(也就是说,老同志们选择不开车的那个时候,其实他们还是可以开车的).”

Dr Amy Guo, the leading researcher on the older driver study(典型的介绍身份的插入语,可以不用看。 ...), explains, “The DriveLAB is helping us to understand what the key points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technology to address these problems(所以,这个DriveLAB可以帮助他们的事儿,分为两个方面,一是找出问题,二是搞清楚如何解决).” “For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone else(请注意,一般而言,在阅读理解中,most of us所认为的估计都是要被推翻的,所以我们可以猜测,实际上老同志们开车还是呲溜呲溜挺快的) but surprisingly(看,果然转折了!), we found that in 30mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed(哇!他们一直保持着差不多50公里每小时的速度!) and so were more likely to break the speed limit(哇哇!他们还有超速的可能!) and be at risk of getting fined(哇哇哇!他们还会冒超速被罚款的风险!感觉大爷大妈们要起飞了!OK,还是说一下几个词,constant的意思是“恒定的”,而这个be likely to 都是“有做什么的可能”,最后的这个get fined指的是“被罚款”,当然,你如果非要翻译成“得到罚款”,那你就承认自己中文水平不高吧). We’re looking at the benefits of systems which control their speed as a way of preventing that.

“We hope that our work will help with technological solutions(with technological solutions是一个介宾结构,放在动词help后面,就相当于一个副词,用来修饰这个动词。那么请问,如果介宾结构放在名词后面,相当于什么词呢?答对了!相当于一个形容词) to ensure that older drivers stay safer behind the wheel(这里的“轮子”wheel显然是指代汽车咯).”
