RESEARCH METHOD
1. Survey Research: The Correlational Method
•Correlation coefficient
- Direction of relationship
- Strength of relationship
-LIMITATION: Correlation does not imply causation!
2. Experimental Research
• Experimental Method - a research technique used to determine cause-and-effect relationships between the variables of interest
• Experimental Logic - Basic elements
-Random assignment of participants to experimental conditions
-Independent variable - a variable that is systematically manipulated to determine its effects on behavior
-Dependent variable - the behavior that is being measured and that is dependent on the independent variable
Benefits – Can show cause and effect
Limitations- Often conducted using student samples; hard to generalize to working adults; not always possible to randomly assign people to certain conditions
3. Qualitative Research Methods
• Qualitative Research - a type of research that relies on preserving the natural qualities of the situation being studied
• Types:
-Naturalistic observation - People are systematically observed in situations of interest to the researcher.
-Interviewing – People are systematically interviewed about the topic of interest
-Case method - A particular situation or organization is thoroughly described and analyzed to understand what occurred in that setting; often based on interviews and observations.
Benefits - Useful in providing basic insights and developing theory
Limitations- Results have limited generalizability
