Chapter#1:CHD, UA!
Alve awoke, finding herself driving a machine down a scarlet channel.
"Are you all right? You had fainted again."
"Where am I, and who are you? "
"Stop your philosophy. It's emergency now. Turn left at the corner. We are close to the aortic root. Beware the erythrocytes."
Alve saw millions of them shooting at her like ruby comets. Almost instinctively she operated the joystick to evade direct collision with them.
"Now on my mark. Aortic sinus, turn!"
The machine dug into a hole.
It was coronary artery.
"What happened?" Asked Alve.
"Your grandpa's got CHD, UA. The plaque broke and thrombi are everywhere. Our mission is to locate, eliminate them and save from ischemia. We need to hurry. Time is myocardia. Your squad members are on their way. Looks like you've suffered a lot from side effects of miniature procedure."
"Indeed." Alve sighed. Suddenly the machine shook. Alve saw a huge monocyte attaching tantacles on her ship.
"Stay calm." The COM commanded.
The cell walked off, heading for fat deposit.
"Lucky enough you are. The immunocyte didn't take you as threats." COM congratulated, "Unfortunately last time I had to release PD-L1 to escape from phagocytosis."
"You are yet the most creative inventor to build this machine, Keysurvey, thanks to advances in minature tech. I owe you."
"You bet! " Smiled the other side of the COM.
Project FoVeA (short term for Fantastic Voyage of Asimov) was launched in 2400s aiming to create safe miniatures for exploration in human body as well as medical use, inspired by Asimov's novel sci-fi Fantastic Voyage. We were now able to inspect more closely into metabolism taken place in vivo.
"Command, ST-T segment declined. ECG went normal. Sufficient thrombi cleared. Mission Accomplished. We're off."
"Out of danger, right? "Alve threw herself against the chair in relief.
"But wait! " Lancashire paused, "It can't be. ST-T elevation again. "
A short while after another squad member let out a cry of fright, followed by a muffled thump.
"Franklin, what's been up there? Respond! " Lancashire called anxiously.
There was a long silence until a radio chatter broke, "Intact, but got stuck, by a thrombus. "
"Don't panic. I'm on your rescue. Alve, you are the nearest to the plaque, check its status. "
"Copy! " Alve chased after the monocyte.
"Unknown contact. Immediate analysis requested. " Alve was astonished by what she saw - flocks of automated molecular pests were undermining the plaque. "Uploading prow camera recordings and technical scan readings. "
By the time the images flickered on screen, Ukio, the Chief Medical Advisor had been in place. "Some protein void of classification. A new strain of prion, I highly doubt. " was her conclusion.
"Detected covert communication as well. " Keysurvey added, "Intercepting. "
"Command, permission for EMP. " Requested Alve, calmly and determinedly.
"What's your plan? "
"The EMP will cripple these nasty kids and shut up their ugly gossips. And I will present them with deadly gifts they are sure to love - some tickets to allow them to explore the amusement park of phagocytes. We will see them running nowhere. "
Situation being carefully examined, the firing button on control panel went green, "Granted. "
"Wrapping up collection of data. On my mark. "
"In two shakes of a lamb's tail. Fire! "
"Just in case of detached plaque, " Alve launched a cable at the far end which extended out like an umbrella, "A CA filter is needed. " Those widespread pests immediately lay paralysed as EMP was emitted, while Ukio IVed artificial antibodies complementing the prion's conformation which binded with them like Sidewinder Missiles. Instantly they wallowed in white cells chemotacting from all directions.
"Did the trick. Successfully activated the immune system. They are sitting ducks now." Alve reported, and cursed: "Go to hell, filthy bastards!"
"Frank, Lan, your status?" Alve checked before polishing the jagged fissure the prions had eroded.
"Fine. Any help?" It was Franklin who responded.
"You and Lan are to take care of the distal thrombi. I'll take care of the plaque."
Two green lights winked on Alve's HUD as her teammates acknowledged the order.
The first-aid went on smoothly.
"Looks like the mass has been settled down. Let's call it a day, shall we?" Lancashire proposed.
"Evac and relax. I'll do the rest." Ukio cut in.
"I and my grandpa appreciate all of your effort. Supper, my treat!"
As soon as they stepped out of the vehicles they found nurses waiting for them, with Lonicera, Ukio's most trusted maid, taking the lead, "As a routine, please accept Royal Medic Ladies' physical examination to give feedbacks as required by the high-tech administration."
"Hopefully it won't take long." Lony added.
Alve, watching Ukio as she implanted a stent into her grandpa's body, went thoughtful.
Ukio was a foreigner to them somehow. She came from a physician family serving the Queen of Alopes. Her father, who attended to the Queen so well that his family was listed in line with Noble, with his son and elder brother to Ukio, Akio entitled to reign part of the Queendom as Kadd, meaning "marquis" in their language.
Ukio, on the other hand, took after her father in ingenuity and inherited the mantle. She came here as a result of academic exchanges.
"Diagnosis complete." Lony beckoned the squad to leave the medical pads.
"Ukio, my friend!" Alve invited as she approached her, "Would you like to go to dinner with us? My treat!"
"Sure, I'd love to." Ukio smiled impressively like spring breeze, and then turned to Lony: "Postoperative care."
"Yes, Master." Lony replied, "We will take good care."
