A retirement community is a residential complex with a broad range of leisure facilities and recreation centers, which allows the elderly to engage in various activities while maintaining their independence. Therefore, at present, some elderly people prefer to live in retirement communities instead of living with their adult children. In my opinion, this is a positive development.

There’s no denying that retirement has brought some social changes to the elderly. As their peers move away or pass away, their daily social activities correspondingly decrease. As a result, some feel lonely and socially isolated; others become anxious and depressed, which will damage their physical and mental health. Consequently, choosing to live in a retirement community can offer them many benefits physically and psychologically.

To begin with, there are a variety of options available for older adults in retirement communities to match with their different interests and levels. According to a scientific research, socially active seniors tend to live longer, enjoy stronger immune systems, and have a lower risk of dementia. Since retirement communities provide older people with more opportunities to socialize regularly with their peers, it is more beneficial for the aged to live there.

Besides wholesome activities, retirement communities typically offer meals including meal preparation and nutritional guidance for the elderly. Furthermore, as people get older, home maintenance will be increasingly difficult for them, but the elderly living in retirement communities do not have to do the chores because housekeeping services are generally provided in any retirement community. Most retirement communities charge a monthly fee that covers the majority of retirees’ expenses, which means retirees won’t have separate bills for their cable, internet, electricity, heat, transportation, entertainment and so forth.

In conclusion, living in retirement communities is not only advantageous but also cost-effective for senior citizens; accordingly, choosing to live in retirement communities rather than with their adult children has become a priority for the aged, which is a positive trend.
