我们经常会碰到像下面这个例子的情况,什么都不做直到满足某个条件再继续往下执行:

public void guardedJoy() {
    // Simple loop guard. Wastes
    // processor time. Don't do this!
    while(!joy) {}
    System.out.println("Joy has been achieved!");
}

在这个例子中,while(!joy) {}就叫guard block。

有一种更加有效率的guard block的写法是调用Object.wait()方法:

public synchronized void guardedJoy() {
    // This guard only loops once for each special event, which may not
    // be the event we're waiting for.
    while(!joy) {
        try {
            wait();
        } catch (InterruptedException e) {}
    }
    System.out.println("Joy and efficiency have been achieved!");

方法 说明
void wait() Causes the current thread to wait until another thread invokes the notify() method or the notifyAll() method for this object.
void notify() Wakes up a single thread that is waiting on this object's monitor.
void notifyAll() Wakes up all threads that are waiting on this object's monitor.

不知道你有没有注意到一点,上面的例子中为什么要使用synchronized关键字: Suppose d is the object we're using to invoke wait. When a thread invokes d.wait, it must own the intrinsic lock for d — otherwise an error is thrown. Invoking wait inside a synchronized method is a simple way to acquire the intrinsic lock.

The current thread must own this object's monitor. The thread releases ownership of this monitor and waits until another thread notifies threads waiting on this object's monitor to wake up either through a call to the notify method or the notifyAll method. The thread then waits until it can re-obtain ownership of the monitor and resumes execution.
