Good morning.
I was with Julie's father yesterday, and he said to me,when you belong to the Lord. You never know where he is going to take you. Here I am today, and I never expect to be in a place like this. This is the first time I have ever done anything with translation, I'm not used to this. I'm gonna pray.
Lord, thank for your love for us. Thank for that your faithful speak to your children. So we do pray, we hear what you have to say to us today.
I'd like to start by saying the words that I give are for me. I'm not coming from a place having achieved much. These words are for me. I pray the truth of God is revealed in our hearts. It has its way today.
Today I wanna talk about warfare. When I think of warfare, I think of two things. I think of warfare that can be seen nation against nation; then I think of hidden warfare, warfare that happens within a man. The unseen warfare there is the big picture of heaven vs. hell, that sort of things. But there is also warfare that happens in the man, this is really what we want to focus on today.
This is not a warfare of our choosing. Just because it's not seen, it doesn't mean it doesn't affect us deeply. My hope is we all, including myself, are unable to escape the reality that we are in a war. Just want to read you a few scriptures that inspire what I have to say today.
11:12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
Luke 22:41-42 (NKJV)
41 And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”
Romans 6:11-14 (NKJV)
Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
Romans 10:17
10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
I affirm, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.
This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck,
Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
I wanna give an example this morning. An example from a war , a war movie I watched when I was a younger man. It takes place in world war II, probably in France or Belgium. The scene involves three men. There's two men fighting one another in the upper room. They don't have weapons anymore except one of them has a knife, they are fighting face to face. and the German has the US soldier pinned on the ground. He's holding a knife and he's trying to drive into the soldier's chest. While this is happening, there is an American soldier, standing on the stairs to go up to the room. He has a gun and lots of bullets around his neck, But he's so scared that he can't make up the stairs. So you see this American standing on the stairs while his comrade is about to die. And he has a gun, so if he did go up, he would automatically win, but he can't do it. So the German soldier kills the other, and he walks down the stairs right by the American that is holding a gun, and he leaves the house.
I want to reflect on what was the nature of the battle or battles taking place here?
The first one is obvious, there's a war going on. It's easy to see and understand. But the second battle of rages is just as strong. It's a battle that is taking place on the stairs. It's a battle of a man with himself. You see this guy, look the other of despair, that he cannot seem to fight. Though he is engaged in a conflict, there is another power that works within him, That is keeping him from being able to actually engage the battle. Even though we see that his fear doesn't make sense, he has a gun, the other guy just has a knife. And yet he loses this battle with himself. Though he still lives, he lost.
So what was the problem? The problem was this man's failure to be able to engage in corporate warfare. Because his personal warfare had never been won first. He has not conquered his fear of engaging in a battle. So I think this illustrates a very similar battle that goes on within us today. If we don't first fight this battle against ourselves, then we are never being able to engage in the battles that are outside of us, or at least not engage effectively.
First, I want to take a moment to discuss this culture we find ourselves in the modern day of America. It's a very self focused culture. It's all about doing whatever we want to do. It doesn't necessarily look bad or evil, but if we examine it more, we get understanding how much of an effect it has on our spiritual life.
We live in a time and place where we can make most our decisions based on preference. Take for an example, entertainment, we can turn on the Netflix and pick one of the million shows to watch. Or, we can go to a restaurant and we can order any kind of food we want, based on our preference. There isn't a problem with having preferences. But we need to recognize that the preferences are natural, they involved in a natural man. When the preferences begin to control us, instead of us controlling the preferences , that's where the problem begins.
I will give a silly example, but it really illustrates how much preferences control us. I used to be very picky on what I eat. After getting married, I'v gotten a lot better. But I still... Julie made me a sandwich the other day that I did not like. I took a few bites, but eventually I just put it down and said, I can't eat this any more. I lost that battle, right? Because I love my preference and my love of self be what control the situation. I let the flesh prevail. This is a silly illustration, but it's really big deal. The culture we living has trained us to give our flesh so much room to operate. It is important to consider the effect of this culture thing, cultural patterns. cultural allowance has affected us deeply.
I wanted to think it about in our spiritual life. We know we are supposed to read the words of God, not just because we suppose to, but there a lot of lives depend on us taking in spiritual food. But as American, a lot of time saying I don't feel like doing it. And so if we don't fee like doing something, lot of time we don't. The spirit of preference setting is the manifestation of the self life taking over. If self is allowed to have freedom always giving place to our preferences, it will completely overwhelm us.
We're saved, but we have the little use in the kingdom of God. We will be like the soldier standing on the stairs, whose flesh won't let him actually go engaged in the battle. So the battle we face today is a battle of doing or not doing whatever we want based upon our preferences.
This is battle won't go away until we die. Regardless of spiritual status. The verse that I read in Luke with Jesus in the garden, He says not my will which he is talking about not the will of my flesh, not the will of my preference, while you will be done. Christ in his flesh certainly did not want to die. He had a very strong preference against dying. Yet he knew that his will, his self will need to be put to death. So the will of the Father could prevail.
So how can my preferences be overcome? The first step is to realize our preferences likely standing in the way of what the Lord wants to do. Our preferences are not necessarily sinned, they are self, they are the flesh.
Self-will is not a word in God's economy. In fact, it's worse than not useful. It's against what Christ wants to accomplish. Because the primary way God works is through the cross, while our preference will always be against the Cross. This battle is a battle with the new saved man versus the old unsaved flesh. The new man was saved by the grace of God and the old man doesn't want to give up his preferences.
A couple of verses that speak about this, one is Galatians 2:20
Galatians 2:20
20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
Romans 6:11
So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. (Romans6:11 ESV)
All these scriptures tell us that the battle verses of ourselves have already been won, But in order to experience the victory that's already been won, we need to recognize ourselves dead to sin in life to God. We reckon that the flesh and all its preferences, there is no life in it. Life never comes from giving preferences to the place to control. This is something that has to be done with, Christ to deal with it, over and over and over, hundreds and thousand times a day. As this self-preference pops up in the situation we find ourselves in, we reckon or recognize that life only comes through Him, not through the flesh. It's a battle that's inside of us, that just involves us, can't blame it on anyone else. The enemy would like us to think that the problem would be somebody else, another brother or sister, they are the problem. The problem is self-preference.
Now, this battle is won by faith through faith. When I hear the word faith, It's such a big thing that I always just, Oh God, it's not me. I don't have faith. But it's not a big faith that we need that something like "Peter walking on the water". It's the same faith that gives the victory over self is the same faith of when we first believed.
A practical example is us awaking in the morning. The Lord is giving us morning and evening, sleeping and rising, In order to train us in Him. And yet , getting up and getting Spiritual nourished is a battle that we face every day. When we wake up, lying in bed, our brains start to consider the day before it. What activities is going to happen that day? What obligations we have? This starts in the first seconds of the consciousness as we wake from sleeping. This is the natural man natural body functioning, right? You wake up and you start to thinking about things. My question is, does your brain, can your brain handle the day before it? Is your brain smart enough to be able to deal with all the problems you're gonna face this day. And we know it's not. When we put our faith in the lord, We were recognizing that there is no way that we could save ourselves. We don't have the ability to deal with our sin problem. And in the same way, we don't have the ability to get up in the morning and start our day in our flesh to be able to have victory. Our brain isn't good enough, We need something else.
So by faith, just as we recognize that we cannot deal with our own sin, our flesh needs to be crucified, so that we get up. I don't have the ability to handle today. It's from that standpoint that I come to the Lord, not because we suppose to, but because of my life today depends on me having taking in the Lord. We have the Holy Spirit inside of us when we wake up. But, he isn't enlivened to have room to work unless taking on the food, right? How many of us don't have breakfast or lunch today because we had breakfast or lunch yesterday? Is yesterday's food enough to nourish us today? No!
So the same faith, the same does in our initial salvation, that's the same faith of recognizing that I can't do it today that He can, is our daily salvation. So by the simple active faith of getting up, and choosing to go to the Lord, we begin a day where faith is the victory, right!
Instead of giving a preference of just laying in bed for longer because that's what our flesh want to do. We recognize the flesh is dead that sleeping another 30 minutes or an hour isn't going to help us. So we get up.
This is the way of saving faith. It really is. It is daily salvation.
I'm not trying to make a law. It's rather taking the perspective that our life is being able to live in the good of what the Lord has given us himself. Being able to live the good of that, we can't live in the good of that, unless he is given room to work, right? Otherwise, the self-preference takes over and we never live in the good that the Lord had done for us.
As we take in this round of life, give us the day of our daily bread, our spirits can be nourished. And when our spirits get nourished, we are able to take on what day holds in the way we never could before. Whether by pray, or by reading God's word, by devotional or singing in the ends, or something we nurture our inner man. Usually, if you have children , in the first few minutes of waking up, some sort of adversities is gonna come, right? Some sort of problem. Because of the inner man has been nourished, we now are given a choice. The soldier on the stairs doesn't have a choice, because he never has faced his fear of war, right? But since we've been had some time with Lord has take on his nourishment, we actually get a choice: Whether to get our preferences Controlled? Or let the spirit inside of us get controlled?
I think this is that battle for life and death that's waged many times a day. What's going on around us and inside of us. I have a problem with being smart, the smart in my brain. It has zero use in Lord's economy. If I don't have any spiritual food. I'm gonna rely upon this, and it's not good enough. Our mind are so deceptive, we can think through a lot of things and process a lot of things, but it can't be relied upon. It's the path that leads to death.
We don't get to choose whether we're in this battle or not. If the Lord isn't giving room to exercise in Spirit, we will be forced to live according to the flesh. The Lord faced the same circumstances on earth. He was in the flesh. That's the main thing of why the Lord came, right? Because he had to live in the flesh to show that the flesh could be crucified. There could be a victory over our preferences in our flesh, that's why he came. He was only able to rise above this temptation, to live according to his own flesh. Because by faith he was constantly looking at his Father, constantly receiving the inner man's nourishment from his Father.
Now, this really has emphasized the personal side of the things, the personal nature of the battle. But obviously, the corporate side of things is very Important to this as well. As we're here together right now this morning around the table, the inner man is being nourished because there is Christ in Jason, Christ in Charlie, and then I take in that Christ that lives within you guys, right? I want to close by looking at the 2 Chronicles.
Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place, and strengthened himself against Israel. He placed troops in all the fortified cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim, which Asa his father had taken.
For the king to protect the Lord's testimony in Jerusalem, he stationed troops at every border all the way around the Judah. He strengthened the force. He knew that in order to guard Jerusalem, to guard the Lord's testimony, he had to go to the border to guard. Because of any enemy was be able to get in and do any sort of work, it's like when we give any flesh the room to operate. It's just not long before the Jerusalem is attacked and the testimony is lost. This was the corporate effort, right? The border is large. One man can't guard the border. It's a great picture of the church, isn't it? So much strength when we stand together, but it could only happen when the individual soldier has given up his right to live. I'm very encouraged by the end of Jehoshaphat' s life when he was attacked by, this is in chapter 20, We see in verse one when people from the Moabites and Ammonites and others came against Jehoshaphat. They seek the Lord together, what shall we do? They are all doing it together.
And his heart took delight in the ways of the Lord; moreover he removed the high places and wooden images from Judah.
When the battle is about to take place, we see verse 20 to 24.
20 So they rose early in the morning and went out into the Wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.”
21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the Lord, and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying:
“Praise the Lord, For His mercy endures forever.”
22 Now when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated. 23 For the people of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them. And when they [e]had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another.
24 So when Judah came to a place overlooking the wilderness, they looked toward the multitude; and there were their dead bodies, fallen on the earth. No one had escaped.
Pretty amazing victory, isn't it? Isn't wonderful that the singer went first? And the Lord was able to make this absolute victory without them having to even wear the sword, right? But they were ready to go to the battle, and the Lord went before them. They are giving up their own lives, knowing that the Lord is going to give them victory. They had no idea how victory is going to come.
Our close pray: Lord thank for that your word is true. We pray you would just do what you choose. We would be those who would give your Holy Spirit freedom to rule and reign our lives, so that we can be like that song we just sang, ready for your return. Thank you Lord for you for your faithfulness to us. Amen!
