In Semarang, a city on the Java islands of Indonesia, there is a diner which has become quite popular all of a sudden.

This is not a large diner, but it is very special.

It’s called Methane Gas Canteen.

And it’s placed in a landfill called Jatibarang.

The prices of the food provided in this diner range from 0.4 dollars to 0.8 dollars.

That’s about from 2.6 to 5.3 RMB.

The dishes include fried catfish, vegetable soup, fried eggs and other local traditional dishes.

What’s really curious about this diner is that it does not accept cash for payment.

If you want to have a meal here, you need to provide enough plastic waste that values as much as the meal.

20 kilograms of plastic waste is worth about 4 RMB, which is enough for a meal.

So it’s not so hard to figure out that most people who go there for meals are people with low income.

Many of them make a living on recycling garbage.

This Methane Gas Canteen started in January of 2016.

The people who currently run it are a couple named Sarimin and Suyatmi. They have worked in waste recycling for more than 40 years.

The one who originally proposed for this diner is the former manager of the landfill.

By operating in this way, the landfill has not only increased its capacity of recycling but also helped improving the local environment. And the couple’s income has doubled due to this.

At the same time, it has provided many poor people a chance to survive. They now have a way to make a living and a relatively regular life-style because of this diner.

Some of them even found this diner a place to hold on to.

Sarimin said: “I’m really happy to see that the customers like the food here. Even poor people should have the right to enjoy balanced meals. I want to do what I can to provide them such an opportunity.”

The most outstanding part of this project may be its utilitarian.

As you can see, none of the people involved are contributing for free. They all started from their own interest. But in the end, everyone benefited from it. And we now have a really successful public welfare program.

We’ve seen too many proposals for public welfare. But most of them just stayed proposals, because they all counted on others’ free contributions.

But everyone has their own needs and their own problems. Why would they help you for free?

It’s all just natural that such naive projects ended up failures. And those who keep proposing such projects are either stupid or just trying to acquire some moral high-grounds.

The cooperation among people is a matter of benefit distribution.

The society is just the combination and magnification of one after another little cooperation.

The goal of public welfare projects are ultimately to distribute benefit for the whole society on a macroscopic level.

So of course we shouldn’t count on things like belief and faith when we want to reach that goal.

We should start with thinking about benefit distribution. That is the practical way.
